Big shock as little Carla beats Venus

22 Jan 2009

Venus Williams admitted she could not cope with world No46 Carla Suarez Navarro after being knocked out of the Australian Open today.

In the biggest shock of the tournament, the No6 seed made 37 unforced errors as she lost the second-round tie 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Venus has won seven Grand Slam titles and amassed £10million in prize money, while her young opponent has yet to win a tournament on the main tour and banked just £160,000.

The American said: "She played really well and showed a lot of character. That was one her best matches and I am not surprised how she played. I am used to dictating the points more."

The 20-year-old Spaniard only stands 5ft 4ins compared to the towering 6ft 1ins presence of Williams but she staged a remarkable fight back from 5-2 down in the deciding set.

"I didn't think I would lose, even after I lost the first set," said Suarez Navarro, who had to save a match point.
