Ivanovic falls apart against Russian teen

23 Jan 2009

Ana Ivanovic'S hopes of another Australian Open Final were ended today as she was beaten 7-5, 6-7, 6-2 by Russian teenager Alisa Kleybanova.

The No5 seed, runner-up to Maria Sharapova last year, got off to a solid start but fell apart when leading 5-3 in the first set.

Ivanovic (below) was serving to go 1-0 up when a double fault let Kleybanova break back and after breaking again the 19-year-old served out for the set.

"It was one of the most exciting matches of my life. I will never forget this night," said the Kleybanova, who raced into a 3-0 lead in the second set against her Serb opponent.

But having lost seven successive games, Ivanovic fought back to take the match into a tiebreak, which she won with a smash.

The final set began just like the second, with the 29th seed taking a 3-0 lead, before Ivanovic began another comeback.

This time the French Open champion only made it to 3-2 as Kleybanova wrapped up the match by breaking her opponent's serve twice more to take the set 6-2.

That set up a fourth-round tie with Australia's Jelena Dokic, who beat the No11 seed, from Denmark, Caroline Wozniacki, 36, 6-1, 6-2. Top seed Jelena Jankovic had a 6-4, 6-4 win over Japan's Ai Sugiyama.
