South Africans pile up woes for Ponting

26.01.09

South Africa completed a Test and one-day double over Australia with an eight-wicket win in Adelaide today.

The tourists, who recently inflicted a first home Test series defeat on the Aussies since 1992, took an unassailable 3-1 lead in the one-day tournament with today's eight-wicket win.

Skipper Ricky Ponting (63) top scored as the Aussies were bowled out for 222 with two overs to spare. Makhaya Ntini and Dale Steyn took three wickets apiece.

South Africa made light work of the target, reaching 223 for two off just 38.1 overs, with an unbeaten third-wicket stand of 144 between AB de Villiers (82) and Hashim Amla (80) ending Aussie hopes.

Ponting's men face a one-day series with New Zealand on home soil before what looks like a punishing return series in South Africa, starting in Johannesburg on 26 February followed by the summer's Ashes clash in England.
