Djourou: Gunners up for the cup

26 Jan 2009

Arsenal defender Johan Djourou insists no team wants to win the FA Cup more than the Gunners.

Manager Arsene Wenger rested several regulars at Cardiff yesterday and saw his side held to a 0-0 draw.

That means a replay will be required on February 3 at a time when the Frenchman is already under pressure to achieve results in the Barclays Premier League and Champions League.

But Switzerland international Djourou insists none of the Londoners' players regard the FA Cup as a second-class competition.

He said: "It's a chance for everyone to get silverware. It is very important for the players at Arsenal.

"We are after it, we want to win it. That's the way we play in every competition - we are not taking it lightly.

"It is a competition we want to win because Arsenal wants to be the best and to do that you have to win everything.

"It (the replay) is a game we could have done without but we have it and we will do the job at the end of it.

"Replays are what the FA Cup is about too. It's the magic of it, you might say, because it is different to play replays and to have the chance to play the same team again."

Cardiff could also be forgiven for concentrating on other issues as the Bluebirds are play-off contenders in the Coca-Cola Championship.

But midfielder Joe Ledley, who is tipped to be playing in the Premier League soon even if City do not go up, is determined to go all the way in the FA Cup - just like the Welsh club did last season, when they were beaten in the final by Portsmouth.

He said: "We believe in ourselves and there is no doubt we are capable of winning at Arsenal.

"They are one of the best teams in Europe but we matched them at Ninian Park and we can do the same again.

"There is no point in making the trip to the Emirates unless we really believe in ourselves. We will go there intending to give it everything we have in the bid to win."

Ledley is understood to be coveted by West Ham and Fulham, and Stoke had a £6million bid turned down at the start of the season.

Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale, who is hoping to borrow Manchester City's young Wales international striker Ched Evans, is adamant only an "outrageous" bid would tempt the Bluebirds to sell - and that is fine by Ledley.

He said: "That doesn't unsettle me at all and I've shown that with my performances in recent matches. I am simply getting on with playing as well as I possibly can for Cardiff.

"Anything else is down to the club. I am under contract to Cardiff until at least the end of next season and my future is down to the people here.
"If they accept an offer it will be something to think about. Until then I will get on with my job, which is playing for Cardiff City."
