Rehabilitation: Kenwyne Jones suffered a serious injury while playing for Trinidad and Tobago in 2008, and Sunderland manager Ricky Sbragia believes he has still not fully recovered

Jones snubs Spurs and signs new Sunderland deal

27 Jan 2009

Sunderland striker Kenwyne Jones has ended speculation over his future by signing a new four-and-a-half-year deal at the Stadium of Light.

The 24-year-old Trinidad and Tobago international put pen to paper after Tottenham were told once and for all that he was not for sale.

Jones' decision to extend his stay on Wearside until the summer of 2013 was announced this morning.

Manager Ricky Sbragia told the club's website, www.safc.com: "I'm absolutely delighted that Kenwyne has committed to the club for the long term.

"He's young with a great future ahead of him and has already proven himself to be a key player for us.

"The fact that we've had interest from top clubs shows how much of an asset he is and it's fantastic that he will be a Sunderland player for many years to come."

Earlier today it was reported that Spurs tabled a £15m take-it-or-leave-it deal for Jones, but Sunderland look to have resisted this approach.

Harry Redknapp may now turn his attention to Lyon striker Fred or former player Robbie Keane in a bid to solve the club's striker crisis.

Keep free-scoring Jones - get rid off (I'll turn up when I feel like it) Chimbonda. Sounds good to me - even at a loss. Has Harry boy lost his touch?

PS At least by turning up late he won't have parked in Harry's car parking space!

The royal 'we' should of course extend to season ticket holders and armchair supporters who regularly subscribe to SKY or SETANTA TV, andd if Rob is indeed in one of these categories, he has every right to enquire as to which gem Redknacker will unearth next to lead Tottenham's relegation battle

No too sure what the Tottenham management is thinking. The club does not need another striker. Put some confidence in the current squad and success will follow. When last did Manchester United but a striker. The problem is clearly confidence. Show some faith Harry..

Good for him. As an Arsenal supporter its nice to see a bit of club loyalty from a player..Mind you, you would have to be barking to change playing for Sunderland to playing for Spurs

I love it when Rob (Hotspurs) or is it Gunner Rob talks as though he is spending his own money buying Spurs players.
Quote: "Where exactly are we getting these funds from & why are we paying such extortionate sums for these players?".
Rob your a 'God Send', if not a bit confused. Its not "where are we getting these funds" its where are they getting these funds.
I wouldn't stress out about how other people run their business ventures.

Jones will be a Spurs player come next summer - after Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Newcastle are dumped out of the Premier League.

Maybe Jones is concerned about all the strikers that Harry Redknapp says he wants to sign, so understandably doesn't wish to spend his career warming a bench for a Championship bound team ?

Apparently Jones is staying at Sunderland despite Harry's second-hand car dealer tactics. Having spent approximately £26 million so far this window on re-signing 2 former players, one aging reserve keeper & an absurdly overpriced Wigan player, how long will Daniel Levy retain Rednapp's services after he fails to break into the top four?

Palacios £14 million, Defoe £9 million, Chimbonda £3 million & now Jones £15 million. Where exactly are we getting these funds from & why are we paying such extortionate sums for these players?

What is wrong with Spurs? They moaned constantly in the summer about Keane & Berbatov being unsettled by other clubs yet all they have done this transfer window is to tap players up, why are the FA turning a blind eye yet again??
