Monty set to lead Euro bid to reclaim Ryder Cup

Colin Montgomerie is expected to be named Europe's Ryder Cup captain tomorrow for next year's contest in Wales.

The announcement will be made in Dubai by European Tour's Tournament Committee, who are also set to give the 2012 captaincy to Spain's Jose Maria Olazabal.

Sam Torrance, winning captain at The Belfry in 2002 and close to the committee who will appoint the successor to Nick Faldo, said: "I believe they are going to announce two captains tomorrow. Common sense says it should be Montgomerie and then Olazabal."

When Montgomerie initially failed to make Faldo's team for the last Cup, which ended in defeat for Europe, the 45-year-old Scot insisted he would still attempt to qualify for the next showdown to be hosted by Celtic Manor, near Cardiff.

But now, having apparently accepted that he no longer possesses the form that won a record eight European Tour Order of Merits and earned eight Ryder Cup appearances, Monty has indicated he would like to be considered for Wales rather than wait until 2014, when the event goes to his home turf at Gleneagles in Scotland.

Torrance said: "I was shocked that Colin should say at this early stage that he didn't think he would make the team for 2010. It's a very brave decision, but it's the right decision. I think 100 per cent he is absolutely the right man for the job in Wales."
