Edwin van der Sar
Shot stopper: Edwin van der Sar beat the previous clean-sheet record held by Petr Cech

Fergie's Van der Star

28 Jan 2009

Sir Alex Ferguson hailed goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar and his defence after they set a double Premier League record in Manchester United's 5-0 demolition of West Brom last night.

Van der Sar surpassed Petr Cech's record of 1,025 minutes without conceding a goal for Chelsea during the 2004-2005 campaign in the cruise at The Hawthorns.

And he also set a new record of 11 successive clean sheets, overtaking the tally set by the Blues during the same season.

Ferguson said: "The defensive record is fantastic and it is down to the experience we have at the back."

Cristiano Ronaldo (two), Dimitar Berbatov, Nemanja Vidic and Carlos Tevez scored the goals as United moved three points clear of Liverpool, who play at Wigan tonight.
