Nadal gives the edge to Federer after epic win
30.01.09
Rafael Nadal admitted Roger Federer will be the favourite for their Australian Open Final after winning the longest match in the tournament's history today.
The Spaniard fears he could still be feeling the effects of his gruelling five-hour and 14minute victory over Fernando Verdasco when he plays the world No2 on Sunday.
"Roger is going to have a little advantage with one day's rest and only three sets so he's the favourite for sure but I'm going to try my best to recover," said Nadal, who won 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 , 6-7, 6-4.
The semi-final was three minutes longer than the 1991 clash at Melbourne Park between Boris Becker and Omar Camporese.
However, the longest match ever was at the French Open in 2004 when Fabrice Santoro took six hours and 33 minutes to beat Arnaud Clement. Verdasco had lost all six previous meetings against his Davis Cup team-mate, taking only one set off the world No1 in that time.
But the 14th seed was in electric form today in a match that featured blistering ground strokes, delicate drop shots, huge smashes and some bullet-like serving.
"I knew he was playing well," said Nadal. "It was very tough. He was so aggressive all the time and served unbelievable."

When Murray lost to Verdasco, i couldnt watch the match and was only following up on my mobilem and looking at the scores i was so sure that Murray must have just thrown the match and simply played less than ordinary. But all that i was unaware of was the drastic change in Verdasco form. And all of a sudden i dont blame Murray anymore and understand what he faced. When Rafa wasnt sure what he fate would be at the end and was all fears, then Murray is a little behind in the league of patient, professional mature players.
i for certain see Verdasco claiming the ATP ranking in top 10 soon, if not top 5.

What a fabulous role model! His tennis is electric, his character is passionate, and his ability to grasp the moment is outstanding! Roger may have more rest, but this kid has more heart! VAMOS RAFA!

One of the best games of tennis I've seen ever - no wonder Fernando Verdasco beat Murray - different class altogether and way above his #14 seeding. Agree with above though about gamesmanship from Nadal - but could be a blinder of a final - looking forward to it!!

Gamesmanship from Rafa. He knows he's in Fed's head. Federer will be nervous; Rafa has nothing to lose. Nadal in 4.
