Given is free to talk to City, say Newcastle

Shay Given could be on his way to Manchester City after Newcastle confirmed today they have given the goalkeeper permission to talk to the club.

The move looks on despite Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear revealing earlier this week he was disappointed with City's offer of £5million for the Republic of Ireland star.

Kevin Nolan will go straight into the side for Sunday's clash with Sunderland at St James' Park after completing his £4m move from Bolton - and will partner suspension-free Nicky Butt in midfield.

Kinnear also confirmed today that Michael Owen has suffered ankle ligament damage

The boss said: "We will be without Michael for between four and six weeks."
