Keith Wood believes Ireland's Six Nations title ambitions hinge on Saturday's opening match against France at Croke Park.

It has been six years since the Irish last toppled France and a cruel twist of the fixture list ensures they face what has become their most difficult match first.

But Lions great Wood believes Ireland can win their first championship since 1985 with victory over Les Bleus placing them in pole position.

"Ireland have a boost in confidence over the last couple of months because the provinces have started doing well," said the former national skipper.

"I had no expectations for Ireland up until about three weeks ago, but they do have a chance. It's all about momentum though and we have the hardest game first, against France. If we lose it we have no momentum. If we win it then we're in a good place."

While France coach Marc Lievremont has been happy to wield the axe, the Ireland team has a fairly settled look to it.

Rob Kearney reverts to his best position at full-back while Paddy Wallace comes in at inside centre, reforming the midfield partnership alongside Brian O'Driscoll seen on last summer's tour to New Zealand and Australia.
