Michel Platini
In charge: Michel Platini defeated defeated Lennart Johansson to become president of Uefa in 2006

I won't do any favours for England's 2018 chance, says Platini

UEFA president Michel Platini has told England they cannot count on his support to help them win the bid to stage the 2018 World Cup.

England, who spent £10million on their failed campaign to host the competition in 2006, were one of 11 initial bids lodged with FIFA before Tuesday's deadline, of which four are from Europe.

The England coach Fabio Capello believes it is time for the World Cup to "return home" having only held it once before in 1966.

Platini was at a tribute dinner for Capello in London last night, 24 hours after dining with Football Association chairman Lord Triesman.

But the France great said: "I can't say I support England - or the ones from Russia, Spain/Portugal and Holland/Belgium. It's difficult for me. I will lobby FIFA to make it European only.

"I don't know how good the bid is of England. Lennart Johansson, the president before me, pushed the 2006 World Cup for Germany and my goal is just to get it to Europe. If you have four children it is hard to pick one over the other.

"I don't know if England have the best chance. In terms of the infrastructure, England has everything but so do the others."

FIFA will now ask each bidder to fill out a detailed form and send it back by 16 March. The host for each tournament will be chosen in December 2010.

Meanwhile, Platini has revealed Premier League clubs could be banned from participating in European competitions if they don't live within their financial means in future.

The idea is just one of many proposals that will be discussed at the next UEFA executive meeting in March which will put Chelsea and Manchester City on edge.

The notion of salary caps, spending a percentage of income on wages and banning players under the age of 18 from signing for clubs abroad are all on the agenda. He also condemned City's £108m bid to sign Kaka last month as "ridiculous", but insists he is not picking on English football.

Platini added: "We want financial fair play but sometimes you do not have that in England.

"We do not want teams to spend more than they earn, otherwise we do not want them to be able to play in UEFA competitions. Earning £100m and then spending £120m is cheating.

"If clubs do not adhere to what we say then they will be banned from UEFA competitions and we will go down the league to the clubs that do fit the criteria."

"Earning £100m and then spending £120m is cheating"
no- it's called investment. Paying referees and opponents off, that's cheating. Take Juventus, Platini's former club...

Never expected support from a Frenchman anyway. Typical French response - if the regulations as they stand don't suit France, then either ignore them or change them so they do suit France. I admire their spirit - only wish we Brit's did more of it ourselves & looked after British interests first.
