Trophy triumph: Andy Murray beat Rafael Nadal 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 to capture the 2009 ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament title

Murray beats injured Nadal for 10th title

16 Feb 2009

Andy Murray and his injured ankle were too strong for Rafael Nadal and his dodgy knee as the British No1 won 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 to clinch the World Indoor Tournament Final in Rotterdam yesterday.

World No1 Nadal had a medical time out three games into the second set and Murray (below) capitalised by winning his 10th ATP tour title.

Murray, who has pulled out of next week's tournament in Marseille to protect the ankle which has given him problems in Holland, said: "I thought the first set was very good, I played well and saw nothing on Nadal's movement.

"But after his time out he wasn't running any more and was just hitting the ball hard from the baseline."

Nadal refused to blame his injury for his second successive loss to Murray after last year's US Open semi-final. "He just played better," said the Spaniard. "I tried but couldn't give anything more in the third set. I don't think that this injury will be a serious problem.

"It was an option not to finish the match but that is not a good way to finish a final. I will have a week now before I play Dubai and don't expect a problem so after all I had a great week in a strong tournament."
