Out of action: Jimmy Bullard only managed one appearance for Hull before getting injured

Bullard's ruled out for the rest of the season after knee surgery setback

Jimmy Bullard has been ruled out for the season following knee surgery just four weeks after Hull signed him from Fulham for a club record £5million.

The 30-year-old midfielder, who agreed a £45,000-a-week deal, has played just 37 minutes for his club after jarring his knee on his debut in their 2-0 defeat against West Ham.

Bullard's injury has proved far worse than was first feared with Hull initially hoping he could recover with rest.

Scans first suggested the player did not need surgery but after suffering further discomfort, Bullard this week travelled to the Colorado clinic of the world-renowned Dr Richard Steadman, who decided to operate.

This is the second time Bullard has had major knee surgery on his knee with his first in 2006 when he was injured playing for Fulham.

Bullard spent 16 months on the sidelines and on his return played a key role in the club's escape from relegation last year.

However, he left Craven Cottage after failing to agree a new contract and Hull were eager to get the player as they thought he could revive their faltering campaign.

In a statement Hull, who are currently going well in 12th place in their first season in the Premier League, said: "Jimmy underwent a procedure last night in America to repair a torn cartilage. Whilst performing the arthroscopy, the surgeon noticed fresh damage to his anterior cruciate ligament.

"In the best interests of both the player and the club it was decided to undertake a reconstruction of the damaged ligament which means that Jimmy will be unavailable for the remainder of this season.

"The club wishes Jimmy a speedy recovery and look forward to his return in a Hull shirt as soon as possible."
