Pain game: Kevin Pietersen was injured while fielding during the West Indies' second innings

Fitness fears over Flintoff and Pietersen

England's troubles are piling up after Kevin Pietersen joined Andrew Flintoff on the injured list.

Flintoff will have a scan today on his sore hip amid fears he could miss the Fourth Test, while captain Andrew Strauss can only hope Pietersen suffered no serious damage when he was smashed on the back of the hand last night as the hosts held out for a draw.

England's medical experts are optimistic Pietersen suffered nothing worse than bad bruising but confirmation that he had a lucky escape and some positive news on the Flintoff front would make Strauss feel a lot happier in Barbados tonight.

Although Flintoff bowled at close to full pace yesterday, he was clearly in pain — despite an
anti-inflammatory injection — and will have delivered his last ball of the series if today's tests reveal a badly torn muscle.

Whatever the outcome, Flintoff is likely to come under pressure to limit his workload ahead of the summer's Ashes series — even if that means missing out on £500,000 for an Indian Premier League stint in April.

Flintoff is due to finish this series, go straight into a string of one-day internationals against West Indies, then head immediately to India before returning home for two more Tests with West Indies and a Twenty20 World Cup ahead of the Ashes.
