Stalemate: Cristiano Ronaldo couldn't break the deadlock at the San Siro

We will finish off Inter, insists Giggs

Ryan Giggs is confident Manchester United are in pole position to dump Inter Milan out of the Champions League.

United dominated for large periods of last night's 0-0 first leg, knock-out round encounter at the San Siro but were unable to claim an away goal.

Giggs squandered one of their best chances, while a bullet header from Cristiano Ronaldo was well saved in the fourth minute.

The stalemate leaves the tie in the balance but Giggs is adamant that if United match last night's performance in the second leg on 11 March, they can beat the Italian champions.

Giggs said: “It's still a tricky tie and we would have liked to have scored that away goal but if we perform like we did last night at Old Trafford, then we'll win.

“Experience is going to be important. Inter are a top side and they have got goals in them. We will have to defend well and make sure we put our chances away. It was a good performance and it was just a shame we couldn't score that all-important away goal. We outplayed them in the first half and we were really pleased with the performance.

“We knew they would come out strong in the second half but we were still able to create chances.”

Jonny Evans came through the tie after having a
pain-killing injection in his ankle before kick-off. The Northern Ireland defender was delighted to keep a clean sheet against Jose Mourinho's side. He added: “They didn't really have many chances but the kind of players they have are capable of making something out of nothing, so you've got to be fully concentrated all the time.

“We're very disappointed not to have scored an away goal, especially when you look at the chances we had in the first half when we got in behind them three or four times.”

Evans, 21, said the fixture at the San Siro was particularly special and the biggest game of his career.

He added: “It's definitely the biggest game I've played in terms of importance.

“The atmosphere was amazing — there's something really special about Champions League games.
“Your hairs stand up on the back of your neck whenever you hear the music before the game and it was a great experience to play at a stadium like the San Siro.”
