We can topple United in Cup, says Hodgson

Fulham 2-1 Swansea

Roy Hodgson has insisted his Fulham side can upset the odds by knocking Manchester United out of the FA Cup next month.

Fulham set up the Craven Cottage clash by fighting back from a goal down to beat Championship play-off chasers Swansea 2-1 in a dramatic fifth-round replay last night.

Despite the drubbing Fulham received in a one-sided Premier League clash at Old Trafford last Wednesday, Hodgson believes by the time United come to London in just under a fortnight they could be feeling the strain of their title challenge, a Carling Cup Final and their Champions League campaign.

He said: “They'll have played a lot of games and they'll have a lot of things on their mind. Maybe we won't meet the Manchester United we met the other night.”

Hodgson may be clutching at straws, yet the manner in which Fulham followed up Sunday's well-worked win over West Brom with a totally dominant performance just two days later against Swansea suggests the outcome won't be a foregone conclusion.

Hodgson said: “The way Manchester United played against us the other night is the way we played against Swansea. Our tempo was much higher, our aggression was much higher, our pressurising and our moving of the ball was much better, and most importantly of all we created goal chances.”

Hodgson's side had to come from behind after Jason Scotland caught Fulham's defence cold two minutes into the second half. Clint Dempsey equalised in the 77th minute before Bobby Zamora headed the winner four minutes later.

I admire Roy's honesty, rare among football managers, for admitting that the difference between ManU and Fulham is about the same as between Fulham and Swansea. Best of luck in the FA cup, although should they beat ManU, it will be pointless if they do not go on to win the cup. I don't like the big 4 winning the FA Cup or Carling cup!
