Heads we win: Frank Lampard scores a late goal to secure a 2-1 over Wigan, which moves Chelsea into second place in the Premier League, seven points behind leaders United

Hiddink: We’ll destroy United’s Quintuple bid

Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink has warned Manchester United that he is determined to make sure they don't win everything and walk away with five trophies this season.

United added the Carling Cup yesterday to the Club World Cup they won earlier in the season and are on course to win another three prizes.

They lead Chelsea by seven points in the Premier League, face Fulham in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup at the weekend and are favourites to beat Inter Milan next week to make it into the last eight of the Champions League.

Chelsea also have winnable games in both cup competitions and haven't given up on lifting the Premier League trophy despite trailing United with 11 games to go.

Hiddink believes his side are already on an upward curve after four straight wins, including Saturday's 2-1 win over Wigan, and said: “Of course if we had all the ambition to go to the end of May and be involved in the important days then we have to stop them.

“This is a clash between two classical
powerhouses and hopefully we can get there, although we will have to make small steps first.

“We have got to second in the League and that will help us on the other two roads as well. I'm not naive and United have a good squad but as long as we have the possibility of winning the League, you never know. I like this team as it never gives up, which is what we saw against Wigan.”

Frank Lampard also believes his side can overtake United in the title race. Exactly 12 months ago, Chelsea were trailing the champions by the same seven-point margin they do now and in the end only lost out in the final game of the season.

The midfielder, who scored a late winner on Saturday to push his side up to second place in the table, said: “We closed the gap last year and only fell a little bit short, the gap can close.

Considering the crisis everyone says we're having this season, we're still in second. We're a fair distance behind United but we'll keep going.

There are a lot of points still available, although to be fair to United they have been on a fantastic run, whether that will keep going I don't know.

“We have to believe it might not, worry about ourselves and keep getting as many points as possible. They could feel the pressure like they did last year. You never know what can happen. They can't go on winning forever.”

Hiddink is also impressed with the strength-in-depth United have been able to show, as England pair Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick were left out altogether at Wembley yesterday while reserve keeper Ben Foster proved the hero in the shoot-out.

Sir Alex Ferguson has the right blend,” said the Chelsea coach. “You have to be keen on the balance of the squad as well. You need three groups: the older group with experience, aged 28 to 34, the mid-group who are 23-27 and then the youngsters from 18-23.

“If the balance is right in those three groups, then you can maintain your position as United have managed to do for many years.”

Meanwhile, Hiddink is confident captain John Terry will ignore Manchester City's continued interest to stay at Chelsea.

Fresh reports at the weekend revealed City were looking to step up their bid to sign Terry, having had an enquiry turned down in
January. But Hiddink added: “I saw him in training this morning and he's laughing and enjoying it. There is not one player unsettled. I'm very happy with his performances.”

Hiddink also revealed Ricardo Carvalho will join Michael Essien in a reserve game tonight. Essien has been out for six months with a knee injury, while Carvalho has missed the last four weeks with a hamstring strain.
