Former England leg-spinner Ian Salisbury is to take over as Surrey's 2nd XI coach, after announcing his retirement from first-class cricket.

Salisbury returns to The Oval - following the departure of Nadeem Shahid - after just one season at Warwickshire.

The 39-year-old, who played 15 Tests between 1992 and 2000, made his name at Sussex before going on to play for Surrey and finally Warwickshire.

He spent 10 years at Surrey between 1997 and 2007 and took 486 wickets in all competitions - often bowling successfully in tandem with Pakistani off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq.

Salisbury helped Surrey win nine trophies, including three county championships, in his playing days at The Oval.

Since Surrey's relegation to division two of the championship last September, Salisbury will be the fourth high-profile appointment in a revolutionised back-room team - headed by Chris Adams.

Ex-Sussex captain Adams (professional cricket manager) and former England batsmen Graham Thorpe (specialist batting coach) and Alec Stewart (part-time coach and consultant) will assist Surrey captain Mark Butcher as the Londoners seek to bounce back to the top tier.

A delighted Salisbury said: "Surrey are a huge club, and I want to be a key part of making them the most successful team.

"In the last decade I was part of a largely homegrown side that enjoyed huge success - and in my role with the second team and Pemberton Greenish Academy, I look forward to working with the club's exciting young players to create a new generation of Surrey greats."

The staff changes at Surrey have followed the arrival of former Sussex chief executive Gus Mackay towards the end of last summer.

"Gus Mackay and Chris Adams have put together a top-class cricket management team, and I am very excited to be a part of it," Salisbury concluded.

Adams, three times a championship winner with Sussex, added: "Ian Salisbury has been a great servant of Surrey in the past and has now returned to start the second phase of his career.

"Having both captained and played against him throughout our careers, I know the contribution he will bring to the club and couldn't be happier to make him the latest addition to our cricket management team."

Warwickshire were surprised to hear Salisbury's new plans - after he had accepted a two-year extension to his playing contract at Edgbaston at the end of last season.

But director of cricket Ashley Giles Warwickshire were not minded to stand in his way.

"Following discussions with Ian over recent days, the club agreed that Surrey could approach him in connection with a new role in their recently revised coaching structure," said Giles.

"After a good season in 2008, Ian's contribution to the Warwickshire squad will be missed - but in all honesty, we did not wish to stand in his way when such a good opportunity became available.

"We wish Ian well for the future and are sure he has much to offer in his new capacity at The Oval."
