Chelsea fury over plans to shut down Victoria Line on derby day

Tube bosses are under fire from Chelsea fans over their decision to shut the Victoria Line on the day of the club's London derby at Tottenham.

Seven Sisters is the only London Underground station close to White Hart Lane and the usual arrival point for travelling Blues fans as well as thousands of home supporters. The closure, for planned engineering works on 21 March, leaves the option of replacement buses or the overground train service from Liverpool Street and raises security issues.

A spokesman for website CFCnet said: "Why haven't the authorities shown more common sense? There is only one way for all fans to get there by train and there is a history of trouble between these sets of fans. This is only going to cause the police more problems."

Dave Johnstone, editor of CFCuk fanzine, added: "Tottenham is already one of the worst grounds to get to so this doesn't help. The Tube needs improving but why couldn't they find another day which doesn't inconvenience thousands of people?"

A Transport for London spokesperson said the closure was needed for essential maintenance. She added: "London Underground liaises regularly with the police and will always try to ensure there is sufficient provision for events, taking into account expected attendance. It's inevitable some closures will have to be accommodated alongside other events."

Wright's new kit causes a stir

Money may be tight at struggling Charlton but this is not the new away kit being modelled by midfielder Josh Wright. The 19-year-old joined friend Jack Tweed — and several other pals — in donning women's underwear for a media stunt on the morning of the latter's wedding to Jade Goody.

Wright was also at the forefront of celebrations at the couple's reception in Hertfordshire and is even pictured grinning and dancing in the latest edition of OK! magazine. But it would appear the party spirit does not extend to his club where there is concern Wright's showbiz antics are projecting the wrong image to fans. Given that Charlton are faced with the serious business of a Championship survival fight, he has politely been asked to keep a lower profile.

Keeper's training is straining

There can't be many more unlucky footballers in the Premier League than Arsenal reserve goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

Three months ago, the Polish Under-21 international broke both his arms after slipping over in a bizarre weightlifting accident at the club's London Colney gym.

Then, in one of his first full training sessions back, 18-year-old Szczesny damaged his foot in a heavy collision with a team-mate. A hospital scan later revealed a broken toe which means he faces another spell on the sidelines.

Gael a guitar wizard for Daltrey

What is it with Arsenal players and guitars? Following on from Gilberto's mandolin-playing and Julio Baptista's mastery of the Brazilian ukulele comes defender Gael Clichy jamming with The Who's Roger Daltrey. The pair took to the stage at a charity gig last week in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust.
