Rooney: I hate Liverpool and will crush their title dreams

Wayne Rooney has warned Liverpool he still hates' them and is determined to end their title dream by helping Manchester United to a crucial victory at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Rooney was in buoyant mood last night after United beat Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan 2-0 to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League with goals from Nemanja Vidic and Cristiano Ronaldo.

But all attention has already switched to Saturday's Premier League crunch match against Liverpool and Rooney is pulling no punches ahead of the title six-pointer.

“I'm very excited about the match,” he said. “I grew up an Everton fan, my whole family are Everton fans and I grew up hating Liverpool. And that hasn't changed.

“I think coming to Old Trafford, it will be a difficult game for them. They know they need to win, they need the three points. I'm sure they will be up for it and we certainly will be too. It will certainly end Liverpool's chances if we win and that's why we're looking forward to it.”

Rooney's comments will up the ante ahead of a match that is already regarded as one of the most heated and hotly contested in the Premier League.

But the striker, who set up Ronaldo's 48th-minute goal last night with a wonderfully-floated cross after Vidic headed an early opener, doesn't believe Liverpool are United's only title rivals now that Chelsea have been revitalised under new manager Guus Hiddink.

“I think if we beat Liverpool we'll probably end their chances of winning the League but there's still Chelsea plugging away,” he said. “So we have to keep playing. It won't be won yet.

“If we win we'll be in pole position — actually I think we're in pole position anyway. But I'm not sure it's a title decider, with Chelsea still there.”

Rooney is clearly delighted with United's current form. They sit seven points ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool, with a game in hand, and made short shrift of Mourinho's return to England as they progressed to the last eight in Europe too — scoring twice against a Mourinho side for the first time ever.

“We're delighted we're through,” said Rooney. “To be honest I didn't even know that fact about Mourinho sides, I wasn't aware of it.

“The game is not about Mourinho, it's about Man United and Inter Milan, and thankfully we got through. I'm not really too bothered who we get in the next round now. Whoever we get we know it will be a difficult game because there are no easy games at this stage of the competition.

“The important thing is we're doing well and winning games and we want that to continue. We will just keep trying to win the games and go as far as we can this season.”

Last night's result means United are still on target for an unprecedented Quintuple, having already won the Club World Cup in Japan and the Carling Cup over Tottenham.

They are also the semi-finals of the FA Cup and in strong positions in both the Champions and Premier Leagues but Rooney said: “We don't pay too much attention to the talk of five trophies.

“Obviously you see it written in the papers and said on TV but we try to take each game as it comes. We try to do the best we can and hopefully that will be good enough for us.

“We always try to win every tournament we go into and that's no different now. Thankfully we're still in all competitions but there's still a long way to go in the season.

“We know it's going to be a tough run-in being in so many competitions but this is where the squad comes in.”

If he hates them so much why did he leave everton, also i wouldn't be suprised if everton beat man u and then what will be saying. I know that rooney will eat his words sooner or later. Think before you talk rooney, as the liverpool could be the only team that will beat man u good and proper.

*Help them to a crucial victory at Old Trafford*

Ohh, I've a cracked rib now from rolling all over the floor. We literally slaughtered them in their own backyard.

So, Rooney goes into a stupid over the top tackle and gets sent off after 5 minutes. Oh, how we'll laugh!

I love Rooney. Despite his enormous talent he goes about his football with the minumum of fuss, works for the team and makes undiluted comments like these, a world away from the sterile rubbish we usually have to put up with.

Hope you are right Jon .... there is a chance of it happening ....... now approaching the crucial part of the season, think the game for Utd on the weekend will either be the kick on to a huge trophy traul or could be the banana skin that lets Chelsea slip in ..... lets see what happens this weekend? Huge Huge game!

In any other season people would be talking about the fact that Chelsea could stil win "the real Treble" as they are still in with a chance in the league and at the same stage as Utd in the FA Cup and CL. The pressure is really off them and if Utd slip up in the league Chelsea could suprise everyone. (And I am a Man Utd fan)
