Hearts owner in bid to rule Lithuania
13 Mar 2009Hearts owner Vladimir Romanov has launched a bid to become president of Lithuania.
The businessman put his name forward for the forthcoming election in May, according to the Lithuanian consulate in London.
But doubts have been raised over whether the Edinburgh club's chief will be able to stand as he was born in Russia, not Lithuania.
The ex-Soviet submariner took over at Tynecastle in 2005 and has proved a controversial figure, sacking a succession of managers and players. He also controls the Lithuanian club FBK Kaunas and the Belarusian Premier League side FC MTZ-RIPO.
Romanov is already popular in Lithuania - in 2007, he won Dancing with the Stars, a Lithuanian version of the TV show Strictly Come Dancing.

I don't think he is going to win because most of his supporters are going to be from russian background. There are not so many russian people living in Lithuania to give him the amount of support he needs , a lot of lithuanians still see russians as invaders who took their freedom by brutal forse.
