Rare luxury for Johnno as he sticks with his winners

England named an unchanged team for the first time in almost 18 months today but injuries could still force Martin Johnson's hand ahead the clash against Scotland.

Tom Rees is still on standby as there are lingering doubts over whether flanker Joe Worsley will recover in time from the cut that required six stitches to his hand during the win over France.

Worsley did not take part in the light contact session today but Toby Flood was able to direct operations from outside-half after his shoulder injury responded to treatment. Although Flood appears to have more chance of playing at Twickenham, Olly Barkley remains with the squad.

Team manager Johnson said: “I expect Joe to be fit and I want him to prove that by Friday. He's improved a lot overnight. Toby has also recovered strongly after being very sore.”

Should they be okay, then England will have the luxury of the same team for the first time since they beat France in the 2007 World Cup semi-finals.

Despite England thumping France 34-10 last week, Johnson denied that he had kept the same line-up for the sake of it and stressed there was room for improvement.

“There were lots of decisions to make because of the make-up of the side against Scotland,” he said. “Danny Care and Harry Ellis are two good No9s and you have to make the right choice.

“We were clinical at times against France but there are small margins between success and failure and Scotland were close to Ireland on Saturday and they will be very tough. They are coming to Twickenham desperate to win and have a chip on their shoulders as underdogs. We have only had one win from our last three games and that's what we have to remember.

“Our motivation is to improve on the performance against France and there were areas that weren't good enough. Scotland will battle for the full 80 minutes and we know you can have a great performance and then produce your worst, as France did at Twickenham after beating Wales. Our challenge is to raise our level.”

England attack coach Brian Smith is also demanding a more complete performance from the team.

Although England roared into a 34-0 lead on Sunday, running in five tries in 41 minutes, the bad habits which blighted their recent displays then returned. He said: “We are confident we are moving in the right direction but what we produced against France was only a 50-minute performance.

“We clicked as a team for that length of time and the reaction of the players after the match was good because they recognised we lost the plot after 50 minutes and allowed things to get loose by giving away penalties.

“We hardly saw the ball for 20 minutes and the French could have squeezed the life out of us. However, we showed earlier in the game that things are coming together.”

Scotland have made one change from the side that lost against Ireland, recalling Scott Gray for John Barclay which means Nathan Hines, the Perpignan lock, remains on the bench with Jason White, the Sale flanker, continuing in the second row.
