Fired up: Bronze Cannon can land tomorrow’s Winter Derby at Lingfield

Cannon's set to blow away Derby rivals for Gosden

Bronze Cannon is ready to deliver a knockout blow to favourite Premio Loco in the Winter Derby at Lingfield tomorrow.

Champion jockey Ryan Moore, who replaces the suspended Jimmy Fortune, can warm up for the new turf Flat season next week by landing the £100,000 all-weather contest.

The son of Lemon Drop Kid beat subsequent Epsom Derby fourth Doctor Fremantle off level weights at Newmarket last April and followed that with another victory at the track, before failing to act on firm ground at Royal Ascot in June.

Gosden (below), who won the valuable Kentucky Derby Challenge at Kempton on Wednesday with Mafaaz, gave Bronze Cannon four months to get over that experience and two subsequent outings in decent company proved the four-year-old was still on the upgrade.

Bronze Cannon has raced three times on the Polytrack, winning twice and finishing an unlucky fifth when squeezed for room behind Yahrab at Lingfield in November.

This colt doesn't possess a devastating turn of foot, so Moore is unlikely to have him too far off the pace.

The distance won't be a problem for Bronze Cannon, but Premio Loco has yet to prove he stays tomorrow's 10-furlong trip. The position at the head of the market for Chris Wall's five-year-old follows impressive all-weather performances this winter, but all of Premio Loco's victories have been up to a mile.

His only effort beyond eight furlongs was when finishing sixth in the 1m1f Cambridgeshire at Newmarket last October.

Re Barolo finished a neck ahead of Bronze Cannon when they met in November but, given a clear run, Gosden's charge would have reversed positions.

Moore has proved to be a master tactician in recent years and his brilliance could be the difference.

Barry Hills' team are running well and his quality colt Damien looks the answer to the Sportingbet.com Spring Cup (2.35).

The son of Namid's best run was in a valuable sales race at Doncaster last September when narrowly touched off and a repetition of that would form would be enough.

Matsunosuke has improved all through the winter and will take some beating in the Sportingbet.com Hever Sprint Stakes (2.05).

Luke Morris' mount has won four times already this year and, assuming recent efforts haven't left their mark on the challenger, can complete a nap hand.
