Proud: Delon Armitage celebrates after scoring against France, but says England should have done much better

We should have won the championship admits Delon

20 Mar 2009

Delon Armitage today admitted England had "blown a massive chance" to win this season's Six Nations.

Despite having lost to Wales and Ireland, Martin Johnson's men could still finish second in the championship if they beat Scotland tomorrow.

England received a major boost this morning when Joe Worsley made a remarkable recovery from a badly cut right thumb and Toby Flood passed a fitness test on his damaged shoulder.

It means Armitage will be part of an unchanged side, who thumped France 34-10 last week - a display that was in vast contrast to England's earlier matches which were blighted by poor discipline and yellow card offences.

Full-back Armitage (right) admitted: "We have blown a massive chance to win the Championship and even if we beat Scotland it will leave us with a feeling that we let our fans down. We had a big chance to win against Wales but errors and discipline let us down.

"It was great against France and there was a real hunger for the ball and we have worked really hard. There is a very positive attitude in the camp and everyone now knows what we are capable of producing. But, there is still a lot more to come which is exciting.

"Scotland will be tough - we cannot afford to think that we can just turn up and win or we will be in trouble."

Team manager Martin Johnson admitted he was surprised by Worsley's rapid recovery and hailed the flanker as a "world class player". Johnson said: "Joe is one of the players of the tournament and his quiet confidence has been important in the squad."

I think Delon is jumping ahead of himself a little ........ we lost against Ireland & Wales ...... won (unconvincingly) against the Italians & the French teams performance against us last week was one of the worst performances I have seen from Les bleus in years .......... Johnson needs more time ..... obvious that the longer he has had with the players the more results he has received so we are heading in the right direction ........ but to say we should & could have won the Championship sorry Delon we are a way off that yet ........ I think the proof will be shown when the Lions Squad is announced ..... you wait and see how many Welsh & Irish players will go into that squad compared to English ...... lets try and win this weekend and 2nd place with a new era, team and management will be a decent enough campaign .....
