On the up: Andy Murray will overtake Novak Djokovic if he reaches the last two in Key Biscayne

Andy Murray's bid to break into the top three

27 Mar 2009

Andy Murray will become the first Briton to break into world top three since tennis rankings were introduced in 1973 if he reaches the Sony Ericsson final in Miami.

The British No1 will overtake Novak Djokovic if he reaches the last two in Key Biscayne.

Murray, who has a first-round bye and faces Juan Monaco in his opener after the Argentine beat Marc Gicquel 6-0, 6-4, said: "I go into every tournament wanting to win."

In order to reach the final, however, Murray will probably have to find a way past world No1 Rafael Nadal, who faces Teimuraz Gabashvili in the second round. The pair met in the final of the Indian Wells Masters last weekend, the Spaniard winning 6-1, 6-2, and are seeded to meet in the semifinal in Miami.

Djoko (570 points ahead) has to lose first round for Andy to pass with a runner-up finish (600 points). If Andy takes the title (1000 points), he passes unless Nole is the runner-up.

If...if...maybe?? What if Djokovic reaches the last two in Key Biscayne or win the tournament? Murray's hopes for World #3 is more related to Djokovic performance than any other factor.
