Stewart Downing
On his way out? Stewart Downing could leave Middlesbrough during the summer

Spurs hope to end the saga over Stewart Downing

Simon Johnson
30 Mar 2009

Tottenham Hotspur expect to bring three years of frustration to an end and finally sign Stewart Downing from Middlesbrough in the summer.

Spurs have wanted the England winger in every transfer window since the summer of 2006, only for Middlesbrough to stand firm.

Manager Harry Redknapp came the closest in January when Downing put in an official transfer request, only for Boro to convince him to stay and help their bid to survive relegation.

It has been reported that chairman Steve Gibson will allow him to leave if they fail to stay up, but Standard Sport understands the 24-year-old will go regardless.

Redknapp is determined to land Downing and is confident he will succeed in the off-season, although Liverpool are also interested.

Rob - think you are one of the few honest and straight forward Spurs fans out there at the moment. Totally agree that Pedersen &/or babel better than Downing - hands down! If Downing was around the 8 million mark then maybe worth the transfer, but 15 million ...... come on ......... its true what previous people have said .... check out the boro blogs ..... the large percentage of fans up there dont even rate him that highly ..... dont buckle to the other delusional Spurs fans Rob ..... keep up the good honest work!

Bentley £15 - 18 million with 50% going to our greatest rivals & he isnt even a first team regular. Downing £15 million for a very ordinary player, busy helping Middlesborough's relegation to the Championship! Incidentally, I am certain Cappello doesnt especially rate him, we just have a shortage of left sided English midfield players. I would certainly prefer Babel if he can be prised away from Liverpool or even Blackburns Pedersen, who is superior in talent to Downage. As for Harry, he maybe okay for Southampton, Portsmouth or West Ham, but not for Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea or Arsenal, which tells its own story. Meanwhile Martin Jol is doing superbly in his first season in Germany & if onle we had backed him who knows where we would be now?

What the hell is Rob (mr doom and gloom) on???
jive bunny record springs to mind, the same thing all over...for gods sake man..Martin Jol is gone,(18 months ago) get over it,and start supporting the club not whining at everything, this lot are not Harry`s team, next season with a bit of tweaking we might get nearer the so called top four and the gooners you are so proud of.
Yes we might have sneaked into the top 4 under Jol,BUT staying there is another matter..the wy Rob gloom goes on it makes me along with others here if he is a spurs fan...the club is not in a financial state either, far from it,it is well run,yes there might have been mistakes but what club doesn't make them...come on you spurs

Jason and Chris.
Rob is an Ar5ena1 fan having a bit of fun . All his previous posts point to this.
He clearly gets a kick out of masquerading as a Spurs fan and slagging us off.
Just jealous I guess.

There is merit in what Rob Hotspurs is saying. I agree, we were going places with Martin Jol and it was madness to replace him.

I think however we are now getting back on track and the team is showing some bite. The left hand side is difficult and if Downing isn't the answer, who is?

Downing has been the best player at 'boro for the last couple of years, I think he needs a change and to up his game.

15 Million is madness but 6 - 8 might be ok. Can Bale not fill this role (yes, he's crap at defending but half descent going forward on the wing)

I can't help but feel that you suffer from a touch of the green eyed monster... this seems to have embittered you so, and I do feel a bit of sorrow for your suffering. mismanagement I agree, if you compare to Arsenal yes,I to am envious of Wenger's backing and ability to reinvent his teams, however we are what we are and we could be on the cusp of having a great side under Harry Redknapp... my reference was you're total dismissal of Stewart Downing and him not being good enough for us, its not like were Real Madrid if Arjen Robben was on the cards then great, but he ain't... Downing's a solid bet like I say Cappello rates and he's no mug..

The reason Bentley is in the doghouse is that Lennon is having a stormer and as for Bent look at his goals per mins on the pitch and Woody's high regards for him...

For god sake man keep the faith and get behind them,
no matter what we've done in the past. If Harry's given a fair crack next season, I think Champs league is a real possibility, lets not forget we currently have the best record in the prem over the last 6-7 games!

Villa nearly done it and we are better than them.

Keep the fair and give Harry a go!!!!

Jason & Chris - You are typical of fellow Tottenham fans who live in a dream world. If you are satisfied with our peformance as a club over the last 25 years then so be it. I for one am not. In the early 80's we were as big a club, arguably bigger, as our greatest rivals Arsenal, since then they have won numerous trophies, built superb training facillities & an amazing new stadium. They are now on the verge of creating another excellent team & probably the rewards that go with it. We nearly caught up with them under Jol, unfortunately, Levy's meddling has put us back years, both on the playing field & financially. Ignore the figures recently issued, the next couple of years will show the true cost of the mismanagement. Enjoy mid-table mediocrity & Carling Cup/UEFA runs, while the major clubs compete in the Champions League & top four of the Premiership. I dont think so!

Hey Rob -Unspur,

What a total Numpty you are... Downing is just the ticket IF spurs are fortunate enough to get him, he would provide balance and goals... its not always about having a fancey Dan, wait an see how arshavin copes with the riguors of
Prem football, Downings been there and done it, and is well respected by Capello as well...

Why don't you become a Chelsea Fan and wear pink...

I just dont understand what the managers see in Stuart Downing. He must have something for Capello and previous England managers to pick him plus Harry "Boys" interest.
Is it just the Left foot surely not! Any pro comments

Another extremely overpriced, ordinary player to add to our collection, Bentley & Bent spring to mind. Do we never learn? Our neighbours purchase the supurb Arshavin & we get Downing, which explains our respective positions & aspirations

100% in agreement with Matt and Mark above, we have so many young players give them a chance. Instead we loan them out just when we should be safe, and continue window shopping for the final pieces for our big 4 finish.Eurapa league status won't happen unless we win the fairplay league. Get the younger players involved now and keep our money in the bank.

No, please Harry. He's average. Modric on the left, though not his preferred position, is better than Downing, given the price tag.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO PLEASE GOD NO.
If he was right footed he would barely be in a championship side! I know we like paying too much for players but £15mill for that clowns a total joke.

Excellent news , I wanted Stewart Downing in January and was gutted Boro stood firm .

Downing will be part of the final pieces to Harry's heart felt true eleven , he always works his magic and gets the best out HIS signings , and I truly believe Downing will go on to prove all doubters wrong and make a huge name for himself at Tottenham ! .

He (Downing) is average at best, and way overpriced.BUT unfortunately he does show there is a total lack of quality left sided player about,Bale could be class if his defending improved,as he is quick and has a good left peg, don`t think Harry likes him though, also we must accomodate Modric who is showing hit true ability lately and giving him a roaming role from the left means we have 2 quality thinking players in Keane and Modric..who clearly can play together..other areas we need too strengthen, left full back and a top top midfielder.
lets be positive for once, but not carried away..remember most of this team was not Harry`s lot, wait till summer see who comes in.

Downing would balance the team but we'd be spending alot of money on a player who has the potential to be a squad member rather than a first team player. Give Dos Santos and Taarabt a chance to make their mark!

Oh Dear... and Harry was doing such a sterling job... I really don't understand this obsession with a player who is at best... Average! I cannot believe that Jol, Ramos and Rednapp are all in love with Downing... I think this has to be a Levy obsession, why oh why? Visit any of the Boro forum's and the fans think this is hillarious they don't even rate him... Same old same old for us next season then if this is the best we can do!

No please don't sign Downing we need someone better than that otherwise leave Modric on left or even give Taarrabt a go he would be better than Downing
