Limping off: Gavin Henson has now damaged what was thought to be his “good leg” after enduring calf injury problems on his left leg this season

Panic for Ian McGeechan as Lions prospects pull up lame

The sight of Gavin Henson writhing in pain as Ospreys lost 17-0 to Gloucester in the EDF Energy Cup semi-final will be a serious concern for Lions head coach Ian McGeechan.

Henson, who endured a dreadful time on the 2005 Lions tour to New Zealand, should be one of the key players in McGeechan's squad but it could take another 24 hours before the full extent of the right ankle injury is known.

"It looks like an injury to his right ankle," said Ospreys coach Sean Holley. "The ankle is non weight-bearing and he is having it iced."

Worryingly, Henson (right) has now damaged what was thought to be his "good leg" after enduring calf injury problems on his left leg this season.

It portrays the controversial Ospreys centre/full back as injury prone and McGeechan will want a clean bill of health before including the star in his tour squad, which will be announced on 21 April.

Although Cardiff defeated Northampton to reach the Cup final, McGeechan will be concerned by the dip in form of key Welsh players.

Captain Ryan Jones is not the force he should be, while Ospreys rested scrum-half Mike Phillips for the semi-final - highlighting the amount of pressure and rugby key Wales players have dealt with this season.

England centre Mike Tindall (knee), of Gloucester, and Ospreys and Wales lock Ian Gough (dead leg) were also injured taken off injured at the weekend and it appears that McGeechan faces a series of medical bulletins before can name his 35 players for South Africa.

With Harlequins at home to Worcester on Wednesday and Bath hosting McGeechan's own London Wasps the same night, the chances of more injuries are high.
