England's hopes of ending their troubled winter with a series victory has been given a major boost with Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff given the all clear after injury scares.

Pietersen limped out of Sunday's nine-wicket win over the West Indies with a back spasm while Flintoff suffered a left thumb injury in the field at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.

Following scans, they have now been given the goahead to play at the Beausejour Stadium in St Lucia where the one-day series, which stands at 2-2, will be decided.

And Dimitri Mascarenhas has backed the outspoken Pietersen to make the headlines for all the right reasons on Friday.

Pietersen stirred up controversy last week when he claimed he was "ready to do a Robinho" and quit the tour of the West Indies after being denied a request to make a flying visit home by the team management. He was also highly critical of West Indian batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who he accused of feigning injuries in order to avoid fielding.

Mascarenhas, however, believes Pietersen will deliver when it matters most.

"Kevin's desperate to win games for England and desperate to play for England," he said.

"He wants to play a huge part. Everyone knows how good a batter he is and he wants to go out and prove that. Hopefully he can go out there and get a big score for us."

Having lost the Test series, England are anxious to make amends on Friday.

"It hasn't been the best of winters for the team as yet, but we've got a huge chance to turn that right around and come away with a series win which would be a great effort," said Mascarenhas.
