Wales issues trouble John Toshack

2 Apr 2009

Wales boss John Toshack witnessed his young side lose their second World Cup qualifier in five days against Germany last night and afterwards admitted that there were "issues that needed to be resolved."

Looking to bounce back from their 2-0 humiliation to unfancied Finland in Cardiff on Saturday, Toshack saw his side produce a better display albeit only to lose by the same margin against the Germans.

The defeat effectively ended any lingering Welsh hope of qualification to the finals in South Africa as they now find themselves six points behind second-placed Russia, who have a game in hand.

Wales had been dealt a blow hours before last night's Group Four game with skipper Craig Bellamy and midfielder Jason Koumas forced to pull out due to injury.

Bellamy was sent back to his club for treatment on a knee injury, with the FA of Wales subsequently denying that his absence was anything to do with the weekend TV outburst from the Manchester City player over Wales' chances of qualifying for South Africa 2010.

Koumas was known to be unhappy about a persistent hip injury that has restricted his movement on the pitch, and over remarks from Toshack aimed at him and Simon Davies ahead of the Finland game.

One of the "issues" Toshack may now have to consider is the long-term future of Koumas amid mounting speculation the Wigan man was considering walking away from the national team.

Those are rumours FAW spokesman, Ceri Stennett, has denied, saying: "Jason did have a private discussion with John Toshack but he has not retired from international football."

Whether Koumas is picked for the next World Cup match against Azerbaijan in Baku is open to debate.

The speculation about Koumas' future ended a week of disharmony in the Wales camp, in particular following the humiliation by Finland.

Wales performed much better last night against the Germans, and could rightly feel aggrieved after being on the wrong end of some poor refereeing decisions.

Toshack blasted Norwegian referee Terje Hauge, claiming Germany's first goal was a "ridiculous decision that you would not see in Cardiff park football".

Hauge allowed Germany to take a throw that should have gone to Wales and the ball was squared to Michael Ballack who scored from 30 yards.

And Toshack was also angry with a blatant handball in the box by Serdar Tasci soon after.

He said: "The first goal was a ridiculous decision, the throw was for Wales and the linesman had given it.

"Aaron Ramsey was trotting across to take it from an area of the midfield where Ballack was waiting so when the ball was passed by Ballack, Ramsey was not in any position to defend against him.

"As for the handball, it was a penalty and should have been a red card. If that had happened it may not have been so easy for Germany.

"The referee produced decisions you would not see on Llandaff (Cardiff) playing fields in park football."

One player that has retired from the Wales squad is midfielder Carl Robinson after winning 52 caps in 10 years with the Welsh team.

Robinson is currently playing for Toronto in Canada, and his departure from the Wales scene was not unexpected.

He informed Toshack of his decision before last night's match.
