Thrashed: the 6-1 defeat against Bolivia was Argentina's worst result in 51 years

'Mad' Maradona plots revenge after Bolivia hammer six past Argentina

2 Apr 2009

Diego Maradona has vowed revenge after his Argentina side were thrashed 6-1 by Bolivia.

It was the country's worst result in 51 years but Maradona refused to blame his first defeat since taking charge last November on the high altitude in La Paz, which is 3,600 metres above sea level.

Argentina now sit in the last qualifying spot in their World Cup group and Maradona (said: "What hurt me most is that we did not know how to stop the Bolivian attacks. I feel mad and I am expecting revenge but that will have to wait. Bolivia played well. We didn't do what we should and paid for it."

Tottenham striker Robbie Keane snatched a last-gasp equaliser as the Republic of Ireland held Italy to a 1-1 draw in Bari. The World Cup holders had Giampaolo Pazzini sent off early on for allegedly elbowing John O'Shea but Vincenzo Iaqunita still gave the hosts the lead.

Northern Ireland recorded their fourth successive qualifying win after Warren Feeney scored the only goal to beat Slovenia at Windsor Park.

Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack struck in Germany's 2-0 win over Wales in Cardiff while Arsenal striker Eduardo scored in Croatia's 2-0 win against Andorra.
