Title triumph: Paul Casey clinched the Shell Houston Open at Redstone Golf Club after beating JB Holmes on the first hole of a play-off

'Speechless' Paul Casey claims maiden PGA tour victory

6 Apr 2009

Paul Casey struggled to sum up his feelings after securing his first victory on the US PGA Tour.

The 31-year-old Englishman clinched the Shell Houston Open at Redstone Golf Club after beating JB Holmes on the first hole of a play-off.

Casey had triumphed nine times on the European Tour but finally tasted success across the Atlantic at the 77th attempt.

"It's really difficult to explain," said an emotional Casey, up to a career-high sixth in the world rankings.

"When you get introduced on the first tee here and you're playing with Geoff Ogilvy they're going through all the accomplishments Geoff has had, like winning a major, and I'm thinking when it comes to me 'come on, at least mention, you know, something'.

"But I hadn't done anything yet out here. This is the first win and it's fantastic."

The Englishman had led by a stroke going to the 18th hole, with Holmes having finished two hours and 40 minutes earlier with a 69 to get to 11 under.

But after two-putting at the last for a bogey and a final-round, level-par 72 to finish on 11 under, he went back to the 18th tee for a sudden death showdown with the American.

Mistakes from both in the approach meant Holmes got onto the green in four, and when he came up short with his 45-foot bogey putt, Casey was left with two putts for victory from 28 feet.

His first putt rolled up to within two feet and Casey holed out to win.

"That was rough," said Holmes of his play-off tee shot which found the water, "It just wasn't to be this week and it just comes down to a bad shot."

In failing to win Holmes also missed out on a spot at the Masters, which starts on Thursday.

"That's frustrating but there'll be more," he said.

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland's Michael Hoey came from five shots back to win a three-hole play-off and capture his first European Tour title.

The thirty-year-old beat Spain's Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano in the Estoril Portuguese Open at Oitavos Dune after they had finished on seven under overall.

Hoey claimed the joint best score of the final round with a 66 and then clinched the title in the playoff after Fernandez-Castano missed from 12 feet on the 17th.

Hoey said: "It's a joke really - a bit of a dream. I didn't really think about winning going out, but I got all the breaks."
