Jurgen Klinsmann
Goal machine: Jurgen Klinsmann scored against Sheffield Wednesday before going on to be one become one of the most popular players in the club's history

Dream debuts

Ben Bailey and Patrick Whyte
6 Apr 2009

After Federico Marcheda scored the winner against Aston Villa on his debut, we take a look at some Premier League debuts to remember...

Jurgen Klinsmann, Tottenham v Sheffield Wednesday, 1994

Klinsmann celebrated opening his Spurs account by running across the pitch and performing his trademark Klinsmann dive. The goal and celebration instantly endeared the German with the Tottenham fans and he quickly became a Spurs legend.

Fabrizio Ravanelli, Middlesbrough v Liverpool, 1996

Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Ravanelli made himself a hero on Teesside when he scored a hat-trick against Liverpool at The Riverside. The Italian marked the occasion with his trademark shirt-over-the head celebration.

Faustino Asprilla, Newcastle v Middlesbrough, 1996

Despite drinking a glass of wine before the game, and not actually having trained with his new team-mates, Tino Asprilla showed his class by coming off the bench and scoring in the north east derby. The Newcastle fans went wild.

Michael Owen, Liverpool v Wimbledon, 1997

A 17-year-old Michael Owen came on as a substitute and made an immediate impact on his senior debut, bursting through Wimbledon's defence, before slotting the ball past the hapless Neil Sullivan.

Stan Collymore, Leicester v Sunderland, 2000

Although he had already featured in an away fixture, Stan Collymore merits inclusion because of his stunning home debut against Sunderland. Collymore arrived at Filbert Street on a free transfer and quickly reminded everyone of the raw talent he possessed with a blistering hat-trick.

Wayne Rooney, Manchester United v Fenerbahce, 2004

With the amount of column inches he generates every week, it's easy to forget what a precocious talent Wayne Rooney was just a few years ago. On his debut for Manchester United – aged just 18 – Rooney scored a brilliant hat-trick against Fenerbahce in the Champions League; a feat which effectively announced him as a once-in-a-generation talent.

Geovanni, Hull v Fulham, 2008

Phil Brown's decision to sign Geovanni looked risky at first – the midfielder had previously endured a difficult spell at Manchester City – but with the benefit of hindsight it looks inspired. The Brazilian scored on his debut against Fulham and his goals have put Hull on the brink of survival.

Robinho, Manchester City v Chelsea, 2008

Judging by his current form, Chelsea may be thankful that they weren't the club who shelled out £30+ million for Robinho. Things didn't start out too badly for the Brazilian. On his first start for Manchester City – appropriately against Chelsea – Robinho opened his account for the club. However, Chelsea had the last laugh, running out 3-1 winners.

Craig Bellamy, Manchester City v Newcastle, 2009

Bellamy entered the record books when he became only the fifth player in Premier League history to score for six different top-flight clubs when he bagged a goal against Newcastle on his City debut.

Jo, Everton v Bolton, 2009

As he has done with countless other players David Moyes has managed to get the best out of Jo. The Brazilian's time at Manchester City was difficult to say the least. In his brief spell at Eastland the striker only featured in nine games, scoring once, before he was farmed out to Everton. On his debut against Bolton he scored twice, helping the Toffees to a 3-0 win.

Surely it's Tony Cottee's at Everton in 1988? Scores within seconds to grab a hat trick at home in a 4-0 win over Newcastle
