Tiger Woods warns Padraig Harrington over 'Paddy Slam'

8 Apr 2009

Tiger Woods has warned Padraig Harrington he will need the luck of the Irish to complete the 'Paddy Slam'.

Harrington begins his Masters bid tomorrow, chasing his third straight major after winning last year's Open and US PGA Championship.

Victory at Augusta National and at the US Open in June would see the Dubliner emulate Woods's feat of taking four successive majors between the Open in 2000 and the following year's Masters.

However, the 33-year-old American said: "It's not going to be easy. I remember trying to do it myself and it's hard. It's hard to peak four straight times.

"The truth is there are a lot of factors that go into it: having your game come together, playing well at the right time and, on top of that, getting the right breaks.

"People don't realise, just one gust of wind here or there could produce a shot that costs you the tournament."

Harrington, who took his two majors while Woods was recovering from major knee surgery, came to Augusta insisting that he was only focusing on his own game rather than the world No1.

That approach, said Woods, was the right one to take. "I think the whole idea is to handle your own business and, on Sunday, see where you are," he added.

"You don't look at it and say: 'I have to beat this one person to win' because there are a whole host of people that you have to beat."

Woods will begin his quest for a 15th career major alongside Ryder Cup team-mate Stewart Cink and Jeev Milkha Singh, of India.

They are the in penultimate group out tomorrow, while Harrington will start his tournament in the company of Canada's Mike Weir and Ryuji Imada, of Japan.
