Bayern Munich horror show stuns Franz Beckenbauer

09.04.09

Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer described his side's first-half display in the 4-0 defeat by Barcelona as the worst in the club's history.

The Germans conceded all four goals in the first half of their Champions League quarter-final, first leg at the Nou Camp.

Beckenbauer said: “What I saw in the first half was the worst football in the history of Bayern Munich. It was a demonstration, almost a humiliation. They gave us a lesson.”
Lionel Messi led the way with two goals, while Samuel Eto'o and Thierry Henry were also on target.

Barca will appeal the yellow card awarded to Messi by English referee Howard Webb which left the player one booking away from a suspension.
After Eto'o had scored the second goal, Messi and Christian Lell clashed in the penalty area and television replays suggested the Argentinian was brought down by the defender.

However, Webb booked Messi for diving and then ordered Barca coach Pep Guardiola into the stands for his furious protests.
