Phil Parkinson
Not enough: Phil Parkinson saw his side record a 0-0 draw with Coventry

My players will stay on, says Phil Parkinson

14 Apr 2009

Phil Parksinson believes Charlton will retain the nucleus of their squad - despite their likely relegation from the Championship.

The manager saw his side record a 0-0 draw with Coventry to leave them 12 points from safety with only four games remaining.

And Parkinson is already eyeing up a rebuilding job for next season and said: "I think the majority of our players will want to stay.

"Throughout what's happened this season, I've never had one player knock on my door.

"This is a great club with a great reputation. We've got agents ringing us up all the time offering us their players, even looking at our position in the table.

"I'd like be able to keep everybody because if we do, we've got a core of very good players and we'd try to add to it. If we can do that, we'd have a great team."

Sounds like Phil Parkinson has been out in the sun too long. Here's a club adrift at the bottom of the table and he thinks they already have "a core of very good players" .....hmmm, not based on this year's performances they're not. He's not even sure of his own position after the season (but then again who else could they get that's cheap?), mounting debts and players on high salaries.... those players that remain next year will find it difficult in League 1, where the top teams don't take any prisoners, the trips "ooop north" are always a physical challenge and where the anoraks will be treated as pompous southern softies who need roughing up. Face it, Charlton will remain in League 1 for years until they sort out their finances, bring through a new team built on league 1 related contracts and wages and have a manager who will be able to develop his own team. "Established Premiership Team" .... you're having a tin bath!

As Millwall are not your rivals, may I say to all the train spotters and aneraks in the vally. We are having a good laugh at The Den.
