Stick or twist: Matthew Upson has yet to commit his future to West Ham beyond the end of the season

Matthew Upson future at Hammers is up in the air

14 Apr 2009

Matthew Upson's future looks set to be decided by West Ham's finishing position in the Premier League.

The England central defender has yet to commit his future beyond the end of the season and is desperate to stay involved with Fabio Capello's England.

To enhance his chances, Upson wants to play in European club competition next year and it is understood the club would not stand in the way of him moving on if the they fail to secure a Europa Cup berth.

Boss Gianfranco Zola has agreed a new long-term contract with West Ham and will sign in the next couple of weeks, as soon as deputy Steve Clarke agrees a new deal of his own.

Why if Upson is getting picked for England now, when West Ham are not currently playing in Europe, would it make a difference to Capello if they are not playing in Europe next season? I feel that this is supposition in the media.

There are four English teams in the last eight of the champions league so Upson is already playing against a large number of the best players in Europe. If he wants to play in Europe then he should wait one season and see what West Ham do next season when both Ashton and Cole are fit, along with Parker, Gabbidon, Behrami amongst the many West Ham injured and when the brilliant kids they have at the club like Tomkins, Savio, Stanislas and Collison have already played their first season.

Zola's project is taking shape and Upson would be wise to stick with a club which will be going places, like Europe, next season.

Arsene Wenger should jump and remedy the mistake he made when he sold Upson. Arsenal should not wait to make a move and get him as the central defence is very weak and needs to be strengthened for next season.
Toure is not good enough and at times he make big mistakes with the result of a goal against us.
