Champions League's five greatest nights

We take a look back at some of the most memorable matches from Europe's premier competition

Man United 4 Real Madrid 3

Quarter-final, 23 April 2003

Ronaldo destroyed United's hopes of reaching the 2003 final at Old Trafford with a brilliant hat-trick before being treated to a standing ovation when he was later substituted. United, trailing 3-1 from the first leg at the Bernabeu, won 4-3 on the night thanks to David Beckham scoring twice after coming off the bench. However, Madrid progressed 6-5 on aggregate.

Deportivo 4 AC Milan 0

Quarter-final, 7 April 2004

Deportivo overcame a 4-1 deficit to knock favourites and Champions League holders AC Milan out of the competition. The Spanish side wiped out Milan's three-goal advantage in 43 minutes with goals from Walter Pandiani, Juan Carlos Valeron and Albert Luque. With the tie poised at 4-4, substitute Gonzalez Fran added a fourth 15 minutes from time, as Deportivo won 5-4 on aggregate.

Chelsea 2 Monaco 2

Semi-final, 5 May 2004

Chelsea missed the chance to make the final after Monaco caught them with two sucker-punches. The French side beat Chelsea 3-1 at home but quick-fire goals from Jesper Gronkjaer and Frank Lampard put the Blues ahead in the tie. However, Hugo Ibarra followed up after Fernando Morientes's header hit the post before Morientes, who was on loan from Real Madrid, added a second in the 59th minute to book a meeting with Porto in the final.

Chelsea 4 Barcelona 2

First knock-out round, 8 March 2005

John Terry headed in the winner for Chelsea as they recorded a 5-4 aggregate win over Barcelona at Stamford Bridge. Barca had edged the first leg 2-1 but Chelsea took a 3-0 lead inside 19 minutes of the second leg. Barcelona then pulled two goals back before half-time when Ronaldinho scored a penalty after Paulo Ferreira handled. The midfielder then added a spectacular second before Terry's 75th-minute winner.

Liverpool 3 AC Milan 3

Final, 25 May 2005

Arguably the most sensational comeback in the competition's history, Liverpool were trailing 3-0 at half-time to AC Milan. But they staged a remarkable comeback with goals from Steven Gerrard (above, with the Champions League trophy), Vladimir Smicer and Xabi Alonso to take the match to extra-time and then penalties. Reds goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek saved Andriy Shevchenko's spot-kick to clinch the title.
