Venus Williams promises 'I'll be back' after shock Sabine Lisicki loss

17 Apr 2009

Venus Williams suffered a shock 6-4, 7-6 defeat to Sabine Lisicki in the third round of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston.

The Wimbledon champion, who had to battle the previous day to beat Indian Sania Mirza in three sets, lost in 87 minutes after the 16th-seeded German took the tie-break 7-5.

Williams had never played World No62 Lisicki, who came from behind in both sets to seal her victory on the clay-court surface.

"I'll try to come back next year and win," said the world No5. "I made some mistakes at the wrong time and she played some great shots."

In another upset, Hungarian left-hander Melinda Czink beat fourth-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in a marathon battle lasting just over two and a quarter hours.

Top-seeded Russian Elena Dementieva swept aside American Varvara Lepchenko 6-1, 6-1.
