Nicola Slater makes light work of transsexual

22.04.09

Britain's Nicola Slater thrashed the first transsexual to play in a professional women's tennis tournament for more than 30 years.

The 24-year-old from Ayr beat Andrea Paredes von Roth, who made her debut in Buenos Aires in a Futures tournament at the age of 37.

The Chilean, born as Ernesto Paredes, underwent a sex-change in 2000 but was only cleared to play by the International Tennis Federation after undergoing tests last November.

Despite losing 6-0, 6-0, Paredes was delighted to play 32 years after American Renee Richards became the first transsexual in the professional game. "It's a dream come true for me," she said.

Slater said: "She has quite a strong physique, but I don't think she realised the power levels in the professional game. I don't think she was quite ready for my serve."
