Taking flight: Charlie Swan’s Oodachee is proving popular with punters and will relish the quick ground in Sandown’s Bet365 Gold Cup

Charlie Swan plots more Sandown glory with Oodachee

Punters are putting their faith in Oodachee to land the Bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown.

Totesport clipped Charlie Swan's gelding to 11-1 from 14s after seeing a significant move for the 10-year-old.

Oodachee was a good second to Irish Raptor in the John Smith's Topham Handicap over the Grand National fences at Aintree last time.

And the Tipperary-based trainer says the horse should have the ideal conditions at Sandown as he tries to win beyond three miles for the first time.

Swan said: "He's won over three miles before, and was only beaten about six and a half lengths when he was seventh in the Irish National a couple of years ago over three and a half miles, which is the same trip as Saturday. He was staying on in Galway Plate when second last year over two miles and six furlongs and he's a very settled horse.

"He was very good round Aintree, very accurate. He's a good jumper so the Railway Fences at Sandown, which come quickly after each other, shouldn't be a problem."

Swan twice won the race as a jockey when partnering Ushers Island in 1994 and Life Of A Lord in 1996. It could have been three had he not been disqualified aboard Cahervillahow in 1991 and placed second behind Docklands Express.

"Hopefully we can put that right," laughed Swan. "Oodachee wouldn't want it soft. His best runs have been on faster going."

After another drying day at Sandown and, with just light rain forecast on Saturday, punters have taken the hint.

Totesport also cut Briery Fox from 20-1 into 16s and jockey Mark Bradburne is hoping that the Henry Daly-trained 11-year-old, who won a three-mile contest at Ascot last time, will get into the handicap.

Bradburne said: "He's a laid-back horse and doesn't like to do anything too quickly, but the handicapper has relented and if Roll Along doesn't run and the weights go up, that would suit us."

Meanwhile, Michael Hourigan confirmed that Church Island, who was second to Niche Market in the Powers Whiskey Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse on Easter Monday, will definitely take his place in Saturday's £165,000 Grade 3 race.

"He'll be on the boat," said Limerick trainer Hourigan. "He's come out of his last race well. He likes nice ground and, if he gets it, you'd like to think he'd have a good chance. Denis O'Regan, who won on him at Doncaster in February, will ride."
