Michael Vaughan fails to impress

23 Apr 2009

Michael Vaughan saw his first chance to impress the England selectors ended prematurely by another man on the fringes of the national team, Steve Harmison, in Yorkshire's LV County Championship match at champions Durham.

Vaughan has not played a Test since stepping down from the England captaincy during last summer's visit of South Africa, but with an Ashes summer ahead has maintained his desire the break back into the national team set-up.

Those hopes were undermined, however, by his former England team-mate Harmison who produced a brutish delivery which Vaughan fended through to wicketkeeper Phil Mustard.

An unhappy Vaughan stood his ground after being given out, but had to go after making 24.
Harmison also took the wicket of Jacques Rudolph, for 51, as Yorkshire reached tea at 176 for four.

Earlier, Durham were bowled out for 362 with Mustard left stranded on 94.

Sussex all-rounder Luke Wright mopped up Lancashire's tail in taking figures of five for 80, but it did not prevent the Red Rose county from taking a slender first-innings lead.

Lancs were bowled out for 299 mid-way through the afternoon session, to take a lead of just 10 runs.

In-form paceman James Anderson, who took six first innings wickets, then struck twice before tea to remove Chris Nash (13) and Michael Yardy (22) and leave Sussex 59 for two.

Warwickshire lost early wickets in their pursuit of Hampshire's first innings total of 379.
The Bears lost openers Tony Frost (four) and Darren Maddy (eight) cheaply to at one stage be 12 for two.

And while Jonathan Trott (22) also fell before the interval, Jim Troughton (38 not out) and Ian Bell (14 not out) guided them to 94 for three.
Worcestershire's Steve Davies was staving off Nottinghamshire's bowlers to remain unbeaten on 106.

The Pears were 313 for six - still 198 runs behind - having added 88 runs for the loss of Gareth Batty (22) in the afternoon session. Stuart Broad claimed Batty's wicket, his fifth for the cost of 60 runs, by inducing an edge through to Chris Read.

In Division Two, Essex wrapped up their first win of the season by seven wickets against Gloucestershire.

Matt Walker guided them to their modest target of 98 with an unbeaten 48.

Kent were bowled out for 417 after centuries from Geraint Jones (103) and Martin van Jaarsveld (107) to give them a 62-run first-innings lead against Northamptonshire.

In reply Northants were 47 for one having lost Ben Howgego (five) to a run out.

Surrey were 81 for none as they set about eating into their first-innings deficit of 143 against Derbyshire. Scott Newman (46) and Michael Brown (28) were at the crease.

Mark Wallace top scored with 128 as Glamorgan were finally bowled out for 505 against Middlesex at Lord's.

Australian opener Phil Hughes was unbeaten on 42, with Neil Dexter on one, as the hosts were 68 for one in reply.
