ICC fear Twenty20 could spark more corruption scandals

CRICKET chief Haroon Lorgat claims the Indian Premier League has increased the chances of corruption creeping into the sport.

Cricket has suffered corruption scandals in the recent past, with the late South Africa captain Hansie Cronje banned after he received about £90,000 for offering information to bookmakers.

And with the IPL in its second season, the International Cricket Council fear that the growing influence of Twenty20 could have a malign impact. Asked about the the risk of corruption in Twenty20, ICC chief executive Lorgat said: "The board has consistently said it cannot afford to be complacent.

"We are mindful that with Twenty20 cricket there is great excitement and money. Put those ingredients into a pot and there is a higher concern."

England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff could not save Chennai Super Kings from defeat against Delhi Daredevils - Chennai's second loss in three matches in the tournament.

Along with international team-mate Kevin Pietersen, Flintoff is the IPL's most expensive player after being sold for £1m at auction.

Flintoff was smashed for 50 from his four overs as Delhi reached 189 for five, and he managed just 16 from 17 balls in Chennai's run chase, which ended in failure on 180 for nine.
