FA set to probe Grays Athletic bet suspicions

27.04.09

The Football Association are investigating suspicious betting patterns in a Blue Square Premier match after large amounts of money were staked on a 22-1 outcome.

Bookmakers William Hill and Blue Square suspended betting before Saturday's game as a result of a large number of bets — including three-figure sums — on Grays Athletic to win after trailing to Forest Green Rovers at half-time. Grays came back from 1-0 down at the break to win 2-1.

An FA spokesman said: “We take these matters very seriously.”

Williams Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe said: “When you have a meaningless end-of-season match you are not expecting to take much money and all of a sudden you are being offered a large number of bets for one outcome and some relatively substantial bets.”

In a statement, Grays said: “We do not condone any form of corruption.”
