Joey Barton set for Anfield return

30 Apr 2009

Newcastle could push Joey Barton back into the frame when they face Liverpool for a critical game in their fight for survival.

The midfielder has not featured since breaking a metatarsal against Manchester City in January but is desperate to prove to Alan Shearer that he is now ready to play.

Newcastle are three points from safety and Shearer said: "Joey will have a full week's training and could be involved at Anfield. He has not had many training sessions but we could have played him against Portsmouth on Monday night for 10 or 15 minutes if it had been necessary."

Liverpool should have Steven Gerrard back fit for the clash.
