Ravi Bopara out to seek sage advice from guru Graham Gooch

Ravi Bopara will seek help from Graham Gooch as he aims to cement his place as England's first-choice No3 for The Ashes.

Bopara was chosen in the squad for next week's First Test against West Indies ahead of Owais Shah, Ian Bell and former captain Michael Vaughan, and national selector Geoff Miller confirmed this week that the Essex batsman would become in at No3 for the match at Lord's.

Gooch, who played 118 Tests for England and captained the side on 34 occasions, has already played a key role in Bopara's development from promising youngster into one of English cricket's brightest talents.

Bopara said: "Graham Gooch is the person I turn to for advice, as he knows me really well. I always look at the best players and their videos to see how they do what they do and I like to learn myself. But Gooch has been a great help.

"He told me to take my bowling seriously and I am glad I listened to him. That, I think, is what got me into the England side in the first place."

A player of remarkable self-belief, Bopara has been one of the few English successes of the Indian Premier League, scoring 138 runs in five innings for Kings XI Punjab, including 84 from 59 balls in Punjab's seven-wicket win over Kevin Pietersen's Bangalore Royal Challengers side.

Bopara scored his maiden Test century against the West Indies during England's tour of the Caribbean earlier this year, he was only dropped from the last Test because England wanted to field two spinners, and added: "I am a guy who likes to look a bit at the opposition bowlers but I have faced this West Indian attack before. I also have faced Fidel Edwards before. So there won't be any great preparation."
