Michael Vaughan hurts knee in football warm-up

Former England captain Michael Vaughan suffered a twisted left knee warming up for the fourth day of Yorkshire's game with Worcestershire at Headingley.

The 34-year-old was injured playing football and director of cricket Martyn Moxon said: “Michael has a slightly twisted knee and will not field today as a precaution.

“We are confident that he will be fit for Sunday's Friends Provident Trophy game with Gloucestershire.”

Vaughan received treatment at Headingley and Yorkshire after suffering the injury.

He stepped down as England skipper last summer and has not played a Test since but remains centrally contracted to the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Earlier this week, Vaughan was overlooked for the First Test against West Indies.

He missed the 2001 Ashes after having surgery on his left knee and the opening Test against New Zealand in 2004 because of problems with the same knee.

Vaughan had a persistent knee injury after the 2005 Ashes, which forced him to have surgery on the right knee in July 2006.

Meanwhile, rising Warwickshire paceman Chris Woakes was in good form for the England Lions again today in their clash against West Indies in Derbyshire when he took the wickets of Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Brendan Nash to take his tally to six for 43.
