Jenson Button: I'll need to polish up my act if I want Monaco win

Runaway world championship leader Jenson Button has played down his chances of notching up a fifth win of the season at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Although victory in Spain yesterday means Button returns home to Monaco with a 14-point advantage he has struggled in the prinicipality in the past. He has failed to finish the race three times and has only been in the points there once, when he was runner-up to Jarno Trulli in 2004.

And looking ahead to the race a week on Sunday, the British driver is not banking of making it five wins out of six races so far this season.

He said: "Monaco's a race I really enjoy and as a driver you'd always love to win there - it's the ultimate. But it's going to be the toughest race of the season yet. There will be a lot of very competitive people there and it should make for a very interesting race.

"I think I need to be a bit more aggressive in Monaco. I have always been a little too cautious at circuits like that so I have to change my style a bit to make it work. It's a challenge but I feel we're up to it."

Button feels the biggest threat will come from Brawn GP team-mate Rubens Barrichello, who celebrates his 37th birthday on the eve of the race in Monte Carlo, and tipped the Brazilian to go one better than his three runners-up spots.

"Rubens has always been pretty spectacular around Monaco," said Button. "You can't pussyfoot around Monaco and he doesn't."

The other major threat is likely to come from Red Bull, whose driver duo of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel were third and fourth respectively in Barcelona.

Red Bull are hoping to debut their version of the controversial double diffuser that has made Brawn such a force this season.

"Mark should be good around Monaco and Sebastian's always quick," said Button. "It's all about qualifying as there's not a whole load of overtaking opportunites. So I think you'll see an electric qualifying session."

The 29-year-old has been on pole for three of the five races and will be the favourite to start at the front of the grid in a fortnight.

In stark contrast, Lewis Hamilton looks set for another torrid weekend. The world champion finished ninth at the Circuit de Catalunya and had the ignominy of being lapped by Button in the dying stages of the race.

But Button believes Hamilton will bounce back.

He said: "Both Ferrari and McLaren are great teams and they've both achieved so much in the past. They've had tough years before, maybe not quite as tough, but they will definitely bounce back. We'll see them being competitive throughout the year."

Hamilton has a less positive outlook on his chances for the remainder of the season, with a car that is off the pace.

He said: "At the moment, we don't have a car capable of winning the championship. It's a shame they haven't given me a car to defend the championship with. The car is that bad. I'm driving the socks off it. There' s just no hope."

Prior to the race, Hamilton was optimistic that race wins could become a possibility as soon as next month's British Grand Prix.

But despite the pre-Barcelona upgrades, the 24-year-old claimed the car had actually got worse in the two weeks since the last race in Bahrain. And he warned he was unsure whether he'd be in a position to win races at all in 2009.

"I don't have a winning car right now," he said. "Of course I hope that'll change but, when you finish ninth, you can't start spending time talking about the possibility of race wins. It's just not an issue right now."
