NFL may hold two games in UK next year

13 May 2009

The National Football League are considering holding two regular season games in the United Kingdom from next year.

There have been two sell-out regular season games at Wembley with the New York Giants defeating the Miami Dolphins 13-10 in 2007 while the New Orleans Saints saw off the San Diego Chargers 37-32 last year.

In October, New England Patriots will play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the London venue but NFL commissioner Roger Goodell revealed that his organisation are keen to hold two matches here a year from next season.

"The fan reaction we've had in London has been extraordinary. We would like to feed that passion," said Goodell, who indicated that the match would not necessarily be in the capital. "We have a great fan base in the UK and that's something that we'll evaluate."

Some players have been critical of the overseas game because of the extensive travel involved in the middle of the season. But Goodell added: "I think teams recognise it's an honour and a privilege to play there. And it can be done without impacting them negatively."
