Patrice Evra thinks it’s all over now

14 May 2009

Perhaps Sir Alex Ferguson will need to re-evaluate his opinion of Patrice Evra after the Manchester United full-back appeared to mirror the “arrogant” gesture that put Rafa Benitez “beyond the pale”.

The United boss launched the scathing attack on his Liverpool counterpart last month after the Spaniard appeared to signal that the game was over after taking a 2-0 lead against Blackburn with 45 minutes still to play. Evra emphatically crossed and uncrossed his arms as United celebrated Michael Carrick's winner at Wigan last night in a signal that could be interpreted as a taunt that the title race is over.

It's true that United need just one point from two matches to claim their 11th Premier League crown but the “contempt” Ferguson felt Benitez showed was arguably no worse than Evra's actions.

I wonder where sportsmanship has gone these days. Evra said that the win over Arsenal was 'Men v Babies' and now seems to be saying that it is all over. Well, this could be case but, respect needs to be shown to the opponent. He might come to regret it in later years. I hope they do not have the same attitude towards the Arsenal players who I am sure will be very sore to see Man U crowned champions after the match on Saturday. They should on the contrary applaud Arsenal for putting up a great fight. That is sportsmanship and this is where footballers should borrow a leaf from the rugbymen.
