Gunners are in a Real fix as Arsene Wenger wavers over future
James Olley18.05.09
Out-playing Manchester United on their own pitch as they are being crowned champions should give Arsenal's players reason to be optimistic going into next season.
Hearing that manager Arsene Wenger has refused to rule out a switch to Real Madrid in the summer might make them feel a little more uneasy.
The Gunners manager watched his team get the upperhand at Old Trafford on Saturday as United earned the point they needed to win the Premier League for the 11th time before making an appearance on French television station TF1 yesterday.
Far from saying that his future still lay at Emirates Stadium, Wenger was evasive when asked whether he had spoken to Madrid presidential candidate Florentino Perez.
Rather than denying the implication, Wenger just said: "Please allow me to remain discreet on this matter."
Perez is the favourite to win the presidential election at the Bernabeu on 14 June and has already made grand promises about the changes he will make in Madrid next season.
Wenger added: "A Florentino Perez project is inevitably interesting for all coaches . . . I'm a coach but I am under contract with Arsenal and totally concentrated on my objectives here."
That project is believed to include signing Kaka from AC Milan and appointing a top-class manager to take over from temporary boss Juande Ramos.
Real were beaten 3-2 by Villarreal at the weekend to hand the Spanish title to Barcelona, who humiliated them last month with a 6-2 win in Madrid.
Perez has long admired Wenger, who took over at Arsenal 13 years ago and has a contract until 2011.
Yet on Saturday, the Frenchman was insisting that Arsenal, under his leadership, will be taking on Sir Alex Ferguson again next season.
The fourth-placed Gunners are 18 points behind champions United in the table but Wenger said: "We will be challenging them next season. You cannot see what we saw at Old Trafford and say we cannot achieve that.
"We had seven players 22 years old on the pitch. Why should we not hope to be even better next year?"
Arsenal will finish fourth in the Premier League this season but Andrey Arshavin insists Wenger is right to believe that their league position does not reflect the quality in the squad.
"We played very well - our team did not allow the freedom to our opponents to start attacks easily so Manchester United were not able to show their strengths," said the 27-year-old Russian playmaker.
"But they have one of the best defences in the world. We did everything on the pitch to win. If we had scored the game would have gone a different way.
"We wanted to show that our club are not so weak as to be only the fourth in the Premier League. I think we have proved it.
"My club will go on another holiday . . . but I hope that [next season] we can experience at Emirates the same feelings, emotions and the joy of victory in the English championship."
Wenger will also be delighted that his youngsters clinched the Premier Academy League title last night with a 1-0 win in the final over Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Arsene Wenger, can go as far as I am concerned he has overstayed his usefulness at Arsenal, if he has problems with big name, players let him get out of the place.
He is either buying someone too young or old bags, what is his problem
Let him leave no man is an island

Arsenal 'fans' shouted Wenger down rudely at the AGM, saying they wanted him out, now he's going. So what's their problem? Every club has its day: this year fourth, next year...? Arsenal are history. Up the Blues! and Benvenuto Ancelloti!

Arsene Wenger has done a wonderful job at Arsenal, winning a significant number of trophies wjile4 his team plays arguably the most attractive football in Europe. he brings on young talent really well - even convincing players destined for Old Trafford to move to North London (Ramsey). So what do Arsenal fans do? They insult him and make him 'feel like a criminal'. It's obvious that the wonderful Emirates stadium had to come at the cost of a couple of years of sacrifice. I don't blame him for being tempted by Real. A lesser gentlemen wouyld have already been off. Having said all this let me say that I am a United fan and would have minded my own business, but I'm tired of reading how Arsenal outplayed United on Saturday. United needed a point and no injuries - so that is the commitment they put into the game. They succeeded for heaven's sake. If they'd needed 3 points make no mistake, they'd have got them. Red-Brit-in It.

If Wenger goes Arsenal are in trouble,if he had the funds of the Chelsea and Man Utd managers we would be in the top two, with the money that he has had available in the last three seasons he has done well to get us in the position we are in.To all of the Arsenal fans who want him to go i would like to know who are we going to replace him with?.Dont blame Wenger blame the board, since Dein left there has been infighting and power struggles going on and until these issues are sorted out we will be lucky to get fourth place again next year.No way will Mourinho or any other world class coach come and join Arsenal until these problems have gone away,i hope he stays and sees out his contract, but i would not blame him for taking the Real Madrid job where with the funds he will have at his disposal winning a champions league title with be a formality.

Gooners should be careful what they wish for.Wenger has been phenomenal for the club and the Premiership. His dealing in the transfer market has been superb. His ability to unearth talent is almost peerless (SAF the exception, perhaps).Arsenal have played some of the best football seen in the Prem (I'm NOT an Arsenal fan BTW).A good number of players attracted to the club are there because of him - I think it's no accident that many originate from France or French-speaking West Africa.A new regime would probably result in many of these players leaving. Like I say be careful what you wish for- money guarantees little look at Newcastle and (even)Chelsea.

Heather - Before you start calling people names, have a serious think. Apart from a season with Bruce Rioch in charge we had a great era under George Graham, during which we won league tiltles, F A Cups & League Cups. We also managed to win a trophy in europe, something Wenger has never achieved with Arsenal. There was life before Wenger & there will be post Wenger. I am extremely grateful to Arsene Wenger for his superb management of the club, but feel that we are going backwards in our team development. The era of great players such as Adams, Keown, Bergkamp, Henry & Vierra has passed and the current squad appears small & young. One of the driving forces at Arsenal was David Dein & I would love to see him back, with Usmanov's money & a new manager such as Mourinho. Failing which I can only see th gap between us & the top 4 widening. Im sorry if this upsets you, but its how I feel.

You lose Wenger, Arsenal will be finished, u lot are just like Spurs fans , moan moan moan, u have probably the best football brain in the country if not the world, and you gooner morons dare to criticise him, most clubs in the world would take him tomorrow,.
Still dont know what i am moaning about its great to think he will go and Arsenal will drop down the league, what a laugh that will be.
- Brian, Wiltshire
I laugh, when wenger was winning titles surely the backbone of the team was one that he inherited? Under Graham were arsenal not more successful? he has in the last few years created a team in his own image, nice but fragile, good on the PR.
Why do people assume that players like Van persie, Fabregas would not like to play for AC Milan, or Madrid. It is not a given that players will stay or develop as thought. please note Fergie won the European cup with Aberdeen!
- John, London
I think if we loose Clichy or RVP to Madrid this summer then Wenger is leaving after next season. He will take some of this current team, which is no bad thing. Bring on Rjikard & Bergkamp!!! Keown as well in charge of the defense. New faces...Juhasz, Vermealen, Melo, Afellay, Dzeok. Or the English route..Lescott, Cahill, Noble, Crouch.

I concur with the comments posted by Julius of England and Jack from Oz. Quite simply, AW is pound for the pound the best manager in the world. Based on what he has achieved with the limited resources at his disposal, he's peerless. I'm sure Messrs. Ferguson, Mourinho and the managers (for the time being) of the so called galacticas of Spain could not achieve what AW has with what is at his disposal. The real emphasis should be on the board and one questions their sincerity about our ability to spend and hence that is why AW is forced to improvise by going for the long term cheaper option of nurturing young talent. Hopefully Usmanov and the other billionaire US shareholder can support AW in the transfer market as I'm sure they're feeling the pain too. The British board has to rid itself of their myopic fixation with the prospect of a largely foreign ownership which is stymieing progress. I have been living in North London for 10 years and one my attractions to AFC is that it is the United Nations team that seems to represent the world and transcend boundaries. Long live AFC and In Arsene we Trust.

Shows how much Australians know about Arsenal. Before Wenger joined Arsenal were NOT "less illustrious than neighbouring Spurs". In fact Arsenal had won 10 titles, Spurs have only ever won 2. Bakc then, Arsenal were the second biggest club in England in terms of success next to Liverpool.
Arsenal also played some great football under George Graham, it was only the last two and a half years it went pear-shaped, whereas Arsenal have been going pear-shaped under Wenger for 5 years.
I want Wenger to stay, but he has to wake up. The defence is the worst I have seen in 30 years!! It's not just down to lack of money, but bad coaching and bad tactics. And what Wenger says in the press is usually laughable tripe. He has to understand that his vision is failing and he needs to change it. The board has ALWAYS supported him with money. The day they don't we can start complaining. And Wenger doesn't need massive amounts of money, he just needs to find 2-3 players in key positions, and he can sell to buy.
- James, London
Arsene Wenger has been amazing for our club - he has turned us from mid table mediocrity to a team that has consistently challenged for the title with a fraction of the resources of those above us. If morons like Rob drive him away (and who could blame him with the abuse he regularly receives from other teams fans, media and some so called home 'fans', then it is a very very black day for Arsenal football club and English football in general.
- Heather, London
After all the wondefull football Wengers teams has played we get a vast amount of their fans walking out with 30 minutes to go in a crucial match at the end of the season. This was hugely disrespectful to a manager and his team who gave not only Arsenal fans but millions of neutrals great enjoyment. I say that as an avid Man United supporter. Even though we hated being beaten by Arsenal there was times when we had to sit back and just admire their wonderful football. I sometimes come on here for a bit of a wind up, but in all honesty if fergie was to retire tomorrow we would jump at the chance of Wenger becoming Uniteds manager.
- James Hennessy, london england
Jack - We all appreciate the tremendous job Arsene Wenger has done in restructuring the club. Before him George Graham also did a superb job. However, I feel that we need a change to take us to the very pinicle of both the premier league & to finally win the Champions League. Wenger has proved that he has the tools to win the premier league, but even his best teams have failed to win the Champions League & this in my humble opinion is due to his insistance on playing attacking football continually. When virtually all successful European teams play counter attacking football. Man Utd & Chelsea are the best domestic examples of this.Yes we are financially stable, do Man U fans care a hoot that the Glazers saddled them with debt?
- Rob Gooner, North London
Rob the gooners comments are laughable and quite frankly baffling...last week he was going on about how Amazing Wenger was and he knew what he was doing with the club sound financially and he was saying who could go and who would comein when clearly a large pot of money isn`t there for him too spend.as a spurs fan it is clear to see what Wenger has done to a club that was boring and not playing any sort of attractive football, yes he has not won nothing for 4 years, but look at the players he had then, the quality winniers he had then have not been replaced...instead he has got whining, overpaid idiots who dont care for the club as long as they get theis fat wages..you Gooners need to wake up and relise you have one of the best, and i thought spurs fans were fickle.

Jo Gooner - if struggling for 4th place is the limit of your ambition, then so be it. As for affording the players mentioned I did suggest selling players as well to help finance the moves & if Usmanov takes over he has stated that he will inject funds to purchase players. I appreciate Wengers achievements to date, he has been superb, but this season some of his decisions baffled me. Such as leaving out Arshavin from the F A Cup semi & using the suicidal tactics of continually attacking Man U & Chelsea when they are two of the most effective counter attacking sides in Europe. From one of the biggest sides in the premiership we are now one of the smallest. David Dein correctly stated that if we failed to being in an owner with huge resources then we wouldnt be able to catch Man U & Chelsea. I am not whining & I certainly am entitled to my opinion. I just think after 5 years of treading water, its time for change. With Mourinho in charge & a 1st eleven of Almunia, Sagna, Chellini, Bruno Alves, Clichy, Rosicky, Alonso, Yaya Toure, Nasri, Van Persie & Arshavin, we will surely prove a threat to the 3 teams above us & separate us from Everton, Villa & Spurs next season.
- Rob Gooner, North London
If Wenger goes to Real why would all Arsenals stars follow him and why would he buy Kaka and others superstars? Surely his philosophy is against million pound players with exorbitant wages and transfer fees or is that only when he is at Arsenal? Perhaps thats what he REALLY wants.
- Spider, essex uk
Personally I don't want Arsene Wenger to go or ever leave Arsenal FC, but he must understand that Arsenal FC is a club made up of the team's, the board & most importantly The Fans. He has to sometimes listen and respond in the right way.
An example of his sheer vision was to bring Arshavin to the club during the January transfer window. The fans including myself are disppointed that for the last 4 years we haven't won any trophies while Spurs have won the Carling Cup during this time, were nearly relegation contenders earlier in the season and have now finished the season strongly. So too Man Utd have improved imensely this season to have the best team in the Premiership. While Liverpool & Chelsea have had there up's & downs this season they too have become stronger unit's for it.
Arsenal must improve next season or else we become a nearly club never really having any ambition to win anything.
- Charles, London
Some of the comments here are laughable,a few weeks ago,the gooner mob were saying on here that the AMAZING WENGER was the best thing around and all it needed to fine tune the great side (that has won nowt for 4 years) was a little experience and too cash in on Spit Fabregas and Abebyebyeor and all will be well, what a bunch of 2 faced glory hunting lot...it shows that these goonerso called fans are forgetting what Arsenal were before Wenger arrived, any sign of him,or Cesc going in the media and all of a sudden people want them out and to cash in,AND THEN THE NEXT THEY SAY HOW GREAT THEY ARE...GET A LIFE YOU SAD LOT
- Phil, herts
The two comments so far are from the type of fans that Arsenal, or any club, do not need. Cop on fellas. You are showing your ignorance. Wenger is the best (full stop). A man with 10% of Utd's resources manages to keep Arsenal in the top 4 of the toughest league in the world. Why should he with a masters degree in economics and a pristine record in top flight football be judged by nobodies who talk about signing players that Arsenal a)Don't need, and b)Can't afford.
Arsenal need mental strength and character. Yes, they need a couple of players, but injury was a problem this season. The bigger problem is psychological. But with the hard experiences of this season those young guns will just get better, tougher, and hungrier. The fans are understandably disappointed. But shut up whining. Think of how disappointed AW must be after busting a gut in the last few years to deliver a team of players and move stadium. He deserves a greater level of respect. Shame on those who don't see that - Shame.
- Jo Gooner, Ireland
Arsenal fans are hilarious. Wenger is a genius who loves the club. Not too many clubs have ever had that and you are trying to throw it away! If he goes to Real the best players will leave and he will immediately attract the best players in the world (Ronaldo will leave his Old Trafford chair spinning). Arsenal meanwhile will become 'just another club'. Idiots.
- John Entwistle, Hertford
Arsenal supporters will get what they deserve. It's a disgrace how you're treating Wenger. He is interested in the longterm health of the club and you're all whining about only getting Champions League football every year. If he leaves who will give you final stages Champions League every year?
- Alex C, London
You all are quick to lambast AW and the team. The issue we should be addressing is what the board is doing. Are they really sincere when they said that Wenger has money to spend? I do not believe it. Some of you lots would be happy to see him leave the club. I wonder if those of you writing here are real Gooners. If you really are, you need to be behind the team and encourage them. I can understand the frustration about not winning a trophy for sometime now- I too am dissapointed. But, it does not augur well to want the head of the manager on a plate each time we fall short. Wenger has promised to bring in new players and I totally agree with him when he said that the club needs 'evolution' and not a 'revolution' as some of you seem to be clamouring for. If we had won against Man U in the semi-final of the CL, AW would have been the best manager in the world and the team would also have be named the best that we ever had. Let's not throw away the baby and the dirty bath water- or else we will live to regret it for longer that 5 years. And one last word AW never said he wants to sign for Real Madrid- he simply said that for any manager it was a promising project. Get behind the team and the manager and 2009/2010 season will be an amazing one for the Gooners!

I'm staggered by Rob the Gooner's comments. I've long thought of him as a perceptive observer of football in general and Arsenal in particular.
But his comments on Wenger are baffling and disappointing.
Some context is needed....
When Arsene Wenger arrived, Arsenal were a provincial North London club, less illustrious than neighbouring Spurs, and with a reputation as a boring, predictable team who would never achieve anything beyond the borders of England.
How far away that small, provincial club now seems -- thanks to the drive and vision of Arsene Wenger.
We now play a brand of exciting, attacking football that is praised across Europe. We play in a state of the art stadium and enjoy training facilities that are the envy of clubs everywhere.
And, best of all, the club is financially sustainable and governed by shareholders who are also massive fans of the club.
Wenger has errected a foundation --both financially and structurally, that will pave the way for generations to come. So what if we don't win anything for a few years?
Look how far we've come! Arsenal are now a world-club, both in terms of international glamour and wealth. Our alumni includes the peerless Henri, Viera, and Petit as well as the current golden boy, Fabregas.
We have everything to look forward to - thanks to one enigmatic Frenchman. My greatest fear is that he will indeed leave Arsenal and we will sink back into our former mediocrity.
Wenger IS Arsenal. Long may he guide us.
- Jack, melbourne, australia
Do I understand that this a threat to Arsenal by Wenger after the protests by supporters who waited patiently for nearly 5 years.(The last FA cup was a gift).
Arsenal supporters have every right since Wenger always ignored their wishes.
If AW goes to Real Madrid he has to deliver immediately .
MANAGERS were sacked even when they won the league,Capello and others. The spanish have a habit of waving the handkerchief when they protest but if they were at Arsenal they would probably bring the bed sheet to emphasize there protest.

Quite frankly Wenger hasnt performed since 2005 & I think its time for Usmanov to take over the club, with David Dein back & Jose Mourinho as manager. We should sign Alex, Drogba, Alonso & Yaya Toure. To finance these purchases sell Adebayor & Fabregas.
